Our Commitment

At Nepal Hiking Team, we recognize that transportation is an essential part of every trekking, tour, and travel experience we provide. It also represents one of the areas where tourism can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, fuel consumption, traffic congestion, and pressure on local infrastructure.

As a Nepal-based trekking and tour operator, we are committed to managing transportation responsibly and reducing its environmental and social impacts wherever practical. We aim to make transportation choices that balance environmental responsibility, passenger safety, comfort, accessibility, reliability, cost, and the practical conditions of travel in Nepal.

Our approach is not to eliminate motorized transportation. Nepal's mountainous terrain, limited road and public transport infrastructure, and the remote locations of many trekking destinations mean that private vehicles, tourist buses, and domestic flights can sometimes be necessary. Instead, we seek to make the most responsible choice available for each journey and to improve our transportation practices continuously.

This policy forms part of Nepal Hiking Team's broader sustainability management system and applies to transportation arranged, purchased, or managed by the company, as well as transportation services provided by our suppliers and partners.

Scope of the Policy

The policy applies throughout the transportation planning and operating process, from selecting a suitable vehicle and supplier to maintaining the vehicle, operating it safely, and monitoring opportunities for improvement.

This scope applies to:

• Transportation arranged for trekking and tour guests, including airport transfers, sightseeing, hotel transfers, trailhead transfers, and overland journeys.
• Vehicles operated directly by Nepal Hiking Team, where applicable.
• Transportation companies, vehicle owners, drivers, and other transport suppliers contracted by Nepal Hiking Team.
• Transportation used for staff and business purposes.
• Domestic flights arranged as part of trekking and tour itineraries where road transportation is not a practical alternative.
• Transportation information and recommendations provided to travelers before and during their trips.

Sustainable Transportation Principles

Our transportation decisions are guided by main principles such as:

Choose the most appropriate and sustainable option

When more than one practical transportation option is available, we consider its environmental impact alongside safety, travel time, group size, comfort, accessibility, reliability, and cost.

Where appropriate and available, we give preference to:

• Public and shared transportation over individual private vehicles.
• Tourist buses or other suitable group transportation for larger groups.
• Electric vehicles (EVs) or other lower-emission vehicles where they are operationally suitable.
• Vehicles with better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
• Direct routes that avoid unnecessary mileage.
• Land transportation instead of short domestic flights where the land journey is a reasonable alternative.

Sustainability is therefore considered as part of our transportation selection rather than as a separate consideration after the travel arrangements have been made.

Safety

At Nepal Hiking Team, we consider transportation safety a shared responsibility between our drivers, guests, guides, and transport partners. We follow the practices below to help ensure safe and responsible journeys.

For our drivers, we require them to:

• Hold a valid driving license and have suitable experience for the route and vehicle.
• Follow traffic laws, speed limits, and road safety requirements.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs or while overly fatigued.
• Avoid mobile phone use and other distractions while driving.
• Drive carefully according to road, weather, traffic, and mountain conditions.
• Keep vehicles roadworthy and report any safety or maintenance concerns promptly.
• Avoid unnecessary engine idling and practice fuel-efficient driving where practical.
• Treat guests, local communities, and other road users respectfully.

For our guests, we ask them to:

• Wear seat belts whenever available and remain seated while the vehicle is moving.
• Follow safety instructions from the driver or guide.
• Avoid distracting the driver or requesting unsafe driving practices.
• Keep luggage and personal belongings safely secured.
• Inform the guide or driver if you notice any safety concern.
• Keep the vehicle clean and dispose of waste responsibly.

If road, weather, or other conditions make a journey unsafe, we may adjust, delay, or change the transportation arrangements. Guest and staff safety always takes priority over convenience or maintaining the original schedule.

Electric and Lower-Emission Transportation

Nepal Hiking Team recognizes the importance of transitioning toward lower-emission transportation. Where suitable vehicles are available and practical for the route, we give preference to electric vehicles and other fuel-efficient vehicles, particularly for:

• Airport transfers.
• Hotel transfers.
• Kathmandu Valley sightseeing.
• Short-distance city transportation.
• Other routes where charging infrastructure, range, road conditions, and passenger requirements allow.

For longer and more remote journeys, the availability of suitable EVs may currently be limited because of charging infrastructure, road conditions, distance, and the operating requirements of trekking groups.

In such cases, we select the most appropriate conventional vehicle available while continuing to monitor the development and availability of electric and lower-emission transportation in Nepal. Our objective is to gradually increase the proportion of lower-emission vehicles used for journeys where they are technically and operationally suitable.

Public and Shared Transportation

Nepal Hiking Team recognizes that shared transportation can reduce the number of vehicles required per traveler and can therefore be more resource-efficient than arranging separate private vehicles. Where practical and appropriate for the itinerary, group size, safety requirements, and guest expectations, we consider:

• Tourist buses.
• Shared transportation.
• Public transportation.
• Group transfers.
• Vehicle sharing between travelers travelling on the same route.

For example, when a group can reasonably travel together in one suitable vehicle, we avoid unnecessarily arranging several smaller vehicles.

However, transportation decisions also take into account road safety, reliability, luggage requirements, travel time, accessibility, and the specific needs of the trekking itinerary. We do not promote public transportation where it would create an unreasonable safety or operational concern.

Sustainable Driving Practices

Nepal Hiking Team expects drivers working on our behalf to operate vehicles in a manner that prioritizes safety, passenger comfort, and fuel efficiency.

Drivers are encouraged to:

• Accelerate gradually rather than making unnecessary rapid acceleration.
• Avoid unnecessary harsh braking.
• Maintain a steady and appropriate speed according to road and traffic conditions.
• Avoid unnecessary engine idling.
• Switch off the engine during extended waiting periods when safe and practical.
• Avoid unnecessary air-conditioning use when passengers are not inside the vehicle.
• Plan routes efficiently.
• Avoid unnecessary detours and repeated journeys.
• Maintain appropriate tire pressure and vehicle condition.
• Drive smoothly on mountain roads and through settlements.
• Follow all applicable traffic regulations and speed limits.

Fuel-efficient driving is encouraged not only because it reduces fuel consumption and emissions but also because it contributes to smoother, safer, and more comfortable journeys.

Vehicle Maintenance and Emission Control

Proper vehicle maintenance is an important part of our transportation sustainability approach. Transport suppliers working with Nepal Hiking Team are expected to maintain their vehicles in safe and roadworthy condition and comply with applicable government inspection and emission requirements.

Where applicable, we encourage suppliers to maintain valid pollution/emission compliance certification and other required documentation.

Regular maintenance should cover key components such as:

• Brakes.
• Tires and wheels.
• Steering and suspension.
• Engine and transmission.
• Exhaust system.
• Lights and indicators.
• Windshield, wipers, and mirrors.
• Seat belts and passenger seats.
• Air-conditioning and ventilation systems.
• Emergency and safety equipment.

Well-maintained vehicles generally operate more efficiently, reduce the likelihood of breakdowns, and provide a safer experience for passengers.

Driver Safety and Working Conditions

Our sustainability responsibility extends beyond the vehicle to the people who operate it. Drivers working for or on behalf of Nepal Hiking Team are expected to:

• Hold the appropriate driving license.
• Be physically and mentally fit to drive.
• Follow applicable working-hour and rest requirements.
• Take appropriate breaks during long journeys.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Never use a mobile phone while driving.
• Follow speed limits and traffic regulations.
• Treat passengers, residents, pedestrians, and other road users respectfully.
• Avoid aggressive or reckless driving.
• Maintain professional conduct throughout the journey.

For long-distance journeys, realistic driving schedules and adequate rest are important both for passenger safety and driver well-being. We do not encourage practices that require drivers to operate vehicles while excessively fatigued.

Waste Management in Vehicles

Transportation should not become a source of unnecessary waste. Where appropriate, vehicles arranged for our trips should have a suitable waste collection arrangement for passengers.

Drivers and guides are encouraged to remind travelers to:

• Keep waste inside the vehicle until an appropriate disposal point is available.
• Avoid throwing waste from vehicles.
• Minimize single-use packaging.
• Carry reusable water bottles.
• Follow Nepal Hiking Team's wider waste-reduction practices while travelling.

Waste collected during journeys should be disposed of through appropriate waste management channels and not discarded along roadsides, rivers, forests, or trekking routes.

Traveler Information and Responsible Choices

Nepal Hiking Team believes that travelers should have sufficient information to make informed transportation decisions. Before or during travel, we provide relevant information about transportation arrangements, including where appropriate:

• Available transportation options.
• Differences between private and shared transportation.
• Relevant environmental considerations.
• Practical alternatives to domestic flights.
• The reason a particular transportation method is necessary.
• Responsible behavior during transportation.

Where transportation is not included in a package, we encourage travelers to consider shared, public, electric, or other lower-emission options where they are reasonably available.

We do not make unsupported claims such as describing a transportation option as “zero impact” or “completely sustainable.” Our communication is intended to reflect the actual environmental and practical limitations of transportation in Nepal.

Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Transportation is one of the sources of greenhouse gas emissions associated with tourism. Nepal Hiking Team is committed to progressively improving its understanding of emissions associated with transportation used in our operations.

Our approach includes:

• Identifying the major sources of transportation-related emissions.
• Monitoring fuel and transportation information where reliable data is available.
• Considering transportation emissions when developing and reviewing itineraries.
• Encouraging lower-emission transportation options where practical.
• Reducing unnecessary vehicle mileage and idling.
• Promoting shared transportation where appropriate.
• Exploring practical methods for calculating transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.

Where reliable carbon information is available, we aim to use it to improve itinerary planning and provide travelers with clearer sustainability information. Carbon reduction remains our priority. Any future carbon compensation or offsetting initiatives will not be treated as a substitute for reducing transportation emissions at source.

Supplier Cooperation and Continuous Improvement

Because many vehicles used on our trips are operated by independent transportation suppliers, Nepal Hiking Team cannot directly control every aspect of vehicle operation. We therefore use our influence as a tour operator to encourage improvement among our transport partners.

We aim to:

• Communicate our sustainable transportation expectations to key suppliers.
• Encourage regular vehicle maintenance.
• Encourage compliance with emission and safety requirements.
• Promote fuel-efficient driving.
• Encourage reduced engine idling.
• Give preference to suppliers offering suitable electric or lower-emission vehicles.
• Consider sustainability performance when reviewing transport suppliers.
• Raise sustainability issues with suppliers when improvement is needed.
• Encourage suppliers to adopt their own sustainability policies and practices.

Where appropriate, sustainability requirements may be incorporated into supplier agreements, purchasing procedures, or supplier evaluations.
