Kathmandu is closely associated with Paubha, a traditional form of Newar religious painting. The paubha paintings are similar to Tibetan thangka painting but with their own distinctive Newar artistic conventions. In addition, the paubha traditionally depicts Hindu and Buddhist deities, mandalas, and religious narratives.
Moreover, these paintings were historically created for religious practice and meditation rather than simple decorative pieces. Today, these traditions are kept alive by artists preserving detailed techniques involving natural pigments, smooth brushwork, and precise iconography.
Most of Kathmandu Valley’s living Newari traditions are preserved and kept alive by unique and major festivals such as Indra Jatra, Bisket Jatra, Rato Machhindranath Jatra, Bhoto Jatra, Gai Jatra, and Ghode Jatra. These jatras bring communities and locals together through chariot processions, music, masked dances, and rituals.
In addition, traditional bahals (Buddhist courtyards), woodcarving, metalwork, and stone sculpture remain the key parts of Kathmandu Valley’s cultural identity. Exploring the elaborate wooden windows, shrines, and local Newari neighborhoods gives visitors close-up insights into how Kathmandu’s heritage continues beyond its famous monuments and temples.
Patan is widely recognized as the City of Artisans due to its long-standing tradition of fine arts and craftsmanship. This ancient city has preserved its traditional metalworking techniques such as repousse and lost-wax casting. In addition, this method is still used by skilled local artisans to create Hindu and Buddhist statues, ritual objects, religious figures, and decorative pieces.
Explorers can witness generations-old craftsmanship around Patan Durbar Square and its surrounding courtyards that continues to be part of the city’s cultural identity. Most of the traditional artistic crafts and styles are passed down within artisan families for generations, making Patan a key center for Nepalese traditional art and metal sculpting.
Bhaktapur’s historic 55-window Palace was originally built in 1427 AD. It was later remodeled and expanded by King Bhupatindra Malla in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. These windows reflect the architectural sophistication of the Malla period and the craftsmanship of the Newar community.
The intricate woodwork and carvings represent various deities, mythological scenes, and patterns linked to Newar culture and religion. The palace was once an important royal residence and remains one of the most recognizable examples of traditional Newari architecture in Bhaktapur.
Pottery has a deep history in the Kathmandu Valley civilization, especially in Bhaktapur and Thimi, where the locals have been moulding and firing clay for centuries. The Pottery Square, located near Bhaktapur Durbar Square, provides an excellent opportunity for explorers to observe local potters shaping clay using techniques that have been practiced for generations.
For generations, pottery has been an important part of everyday Newari life, with clay vessels used for religious rituals, storing food and water, and cooking. As you venture around the pottery square, you can witness artisans working with clay, maintaining a craft that forms an important part of Bhaktapur’s cultural and artistic identity.

Nepal Hiking Team made our 4-day, 3-night trip to Nepal truly special. From the very first message, Ganga Ji was incredibly responsive and thoughtful—he really listened to what we were interested in and crafted a fantastic itinerary that included great hotels and well-organized tours. Our guide, Kumar Ji, was absolutely wonderful—kind, knowledgeable, and a joy to travel with. We genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Hoping to return soon. Nepal Hiking Team is simply the best!

Experience of a lifetime! Leading up to the trip, I felt some excitement and uncertainty because I was traveling from New Jersey to Nepal, so it was a trip to the other side of the world. Also knowing we were going to trek to the highest region in the world.
Once we arrived in Kathmandu, we met up with our guide (Bhim). After a few minutes of talking with him, I felt a sense of calm and my excitement of joy grew from there. And I was right he and his team made sure we had the best experience possible.
The full trek going and coming was incredible. Our guide, Bhim, made sure we had the best experience. Can’t say enough of how wonderful he and his team made this one for the books!
I highly recommend booking with this company and Bhim! Namaste!
I just completed trekking in Nepal together with another solo traveler. The service of Nepal Hiking Team was exemplary from the start till the end. Nothing beats word-of-mouth good reviews.
Mr. Ganga has been very responsive to queries from Day 1 and was physically present even on the last day to officially close the loop for the package tour.
Our guide Bibek was very patient and sincere as he led us through the trek. He resolved issues with his heart and people skills and gave assurance whenever plans suddenly changed.
He ensured things were changed for the better. Our porter, Rajendran, was also good and always arrived ahead of time to ensure our rooms were confirmed.

We had the best time in Nepal. The beautiful views and warm hospitality of the Nepali people are truly unparalleled.
Instrumental to our amazing experience were our guide, Netra, and porter, Vasu.
We were super well taken care of. Netra was quick to assess our physical abilities and was able to effectively set the pace for our hikes. He had very good knowledge of the route and terrain. Importantly, this was our first time attempting a hike at a high altitude, so he took extra care to check on us regularly.
On a personal note, proper gear, including a powerful down jacket for -20 degrees Celsius and a proper hiking backpack, is super essential.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Nepal Hiking Team and Netra/Vasu for your Nepal adventure!
I highly recommend the Nepal Hiking Team for anyone planning to trek in Nepal. My spouse and I had a fantastic time on our trek and greatly credit our positive experience to the thought and care put into it by Nepal Hiking Team in coming up with a personalized plan that would enable us to succeed.
Every detail was considered to match us based on our abilities and interests. We also could not have felt more cared for minute to minute by the team that supported us from the minute we arrived in Kathmandu until our departure.
Our guide, Nim, was amazing -- so careful, thoughtful, warm, and supportive. And our porters, Sabin and Ganesh, were delightful. They were all unbelievably generous in terms of how much they worked to ensure we were comfortable and prepared. They thought of every detail along the way.
