Everest Cho La Pass Trek Overview
The Everest Cho La Pass Trek combines Himalayan adventure with rich Sherpa culture, where you’ll walk around 136-140 kilometers. This 19-day journey includes 13 trekking days through the world's most famous mountain region. The route include destinations like Kala Patthar, Everest Base Camp, Cho La Pass, and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes. Starting and finishing in Lukla, this moderate to challenging trek demands good fitness of trekkers. The highest elevation of the trek is Kala Pathhar at 5545m (18188 ft).
The Everest Cho La Pass trek starts with an exciting flight into Lukla's mountain airstrip before winding through lively Sherpa villages. The landscape changes completely each day, from thick pine forests giving way to barren glacial terrain. Local teahouses welcome trekkers with basic comforts, filling meals, and the kind of hospitality these mountain people are known for. Most people trek during spring and autumn when the weather cooperates, but hardy adventurers tackle this trail throughout the year.
This trek saves its best for the classic viewpoints and tough high passes. The morning at Kala Patthar rewards climbers with Everest glowing in sunrise colors. Cho La Pass demands everything trekkers have as they look over loose rock and steep terrain. Then Gokyo Lake provides the perfect mirror-calm waters. This journey connects trekkers to a landscape shaped by nature's power and the remarkable strength of mountain communities.
Everest Cho La Pass Trekking Route Overview
The Everest Cho La Pass trek starts in Kathmandu with airport pickup and hotel transfer to a 3-star property. A mountain flight to Lukla's famous airport begins the trek through Nepal's Khumbu region. The trail follows Dudh Koshi River into Sagarmatha National Park, reaching Phakding village for the first night.
The path goes to Namche Bazaar, the busy trading center. Two nights here help with altitude adjustment while short walks to Hotel Everest View show great Everest views.
Local monasteries show centuries-old Sherpa traditions that still shape mountain life today. The route goes through rhododendron and pine forests toward Tengboche's big monastery under tall Ama Dablam.
The trail crosses Imja Khola and passes Pangboche village before reaching Dingboche's "Summer Valley" with old-style houses. Wide mountain meadows surround this village where yaks eat grass quietly.
Moving toward Lobuche and Gorak Shep, trekkers reach the last village before Everest Base Camp. The trail goes to Base Camp at 5,364 meters, where Khumbu Icefall creates amazing, dramatic views.
Early morning climb to Kala Patthar gives the trek's best Everest viewpoint with Nuptse and Pumori peaks. The route goes to Dzongla before reaching Cho La Pass at 5,420 meters with beautiful high mountain terrain.
Gokyo Valley welcomes trekkers with beautiful glacial lakes surrounded by tall peaks, creating perfect mountain reflections. Climbing Gokyo Ri gives wide views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and other big summits nearby.
The return trip passes through Dole and familiar Namche Bazaar before reaching Lukla for departure. A mountain flight back to Kathmandu ends this complete exploration of the Khumbu region.

Today you’ll climb up Nangkartshang Hill, a steep trail that will test your legs. The path gets harder as the air gets thinner, so trekkers need to move slowly and pace themselves correctly.
This acclimatization hike follows the smart rule of high-altitude trekking: climb high during the day, then sleep low at night.
Cholatse and Island Peak also come into perfect view, while the whole Imja Valley stretches out below like a frozen river. After taking in these stunning mountain sights, you'll walk back to your cozy lodge in Dingboche for a big lunch and an afternoon break.

This peaceful spot makes you feel deep respect and reminds you just how dangerous these mountains can be.
From there, we walk alongside the huge Khumbu Glacier toward Lobuche. The ground becomes rough and hard, with the glacier's rocky debris creating a landscape that looks like the moon. The trail keeps climbing through this harsh, high country.
You'll see sweeping views of the towering Himalayas from Lobuche during the golden sunset hours.

We'll reach Gorak Shep first, then hike toward the legendary Everest Base Camp itself. The trail doesn't gain much height, but plenty of ups and downs combined with thin air can wear you out.

Your day wraps up with a night's rest in Thangna, giving you time to relax, think back on the day's hard work, and soak in the quiet mountain beauty all around you.

These mountain peaks create a morning show you'll never forget, showing off everything that makes the Himalayas so special. After taking in all this beauty, you'll walk back down to Gokyo for a well-earned breakfast.

Know Before You Go
Cho La Pass
Cho La Pass sits at 5,420 meters (17,782 feet) and gives you one of the most thrilling parts of the whole trek. It links the Gokyo Valley with the Everest Base Camp trail, making your journey both tough and totally worth it.
The path over the pass takes you across rocky ground, slippery ice patches, and snowy hillsides, with incredible views of Awi Peak, Cholatse, Lobuche, and nearby peaks.
Most trekkers start climbing early in the morning when the snow stays hard and walking feels safer. When you reach the top, the huge mountain views spread out everywhere, and you get this amazing feeling from standing on such a high mountain crossing.
Cho La Pass doesn't just connect two popular trekking paths; it brings adventure and stunning beauty that sticks with you long after you go home.
Gokyo - Highest Freshwater Lake System
The Gokyo Lakes make up the world's highest freshwater lake system, located in Nepal's Sagarmatha National Park between 4,700 and 5,000 meters high. This stunning collection has six main lakes fed by glaciers, with Thonak Lake being the biggest one.
Each lake shows off that perfect blue color you only see in high mountain waters. These lakes mean much more than just beautiful scenery.
Both Hindus and Buddhists consider them sacred, believing the waters hold special spiritual power and purity. The lakes became so important that they got official protection in 2007 as a Ramsar site, recognized worldwide for being crucial high-altitude wetlands.
If you're doing the Everest Cho La Pass Trek, seeing the Gokyo Lakes will be one of those moments you never forget. You get this perfect mix of untouched Himalayan beauty and deep cultural meaning.
Standing by the water's edge, you can see Cho Oyu and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier spreading out in front of you.

Everest Base Camp Trek with High passes Trek
My friend and I did the EBC/Three Passes trek a few weeks ago (a mutual friend had already gone to EBC with the Nepal Hiking Team and loved the experience, so we were repeat customers of sorts).
Our guide, Uttam, and our porter, Nima, were incredibly professional and helpful for the ~20 days that we were on the trail.
Their skills, care, and guidance really made a difference during the few times we had to traverse rough terrain in snowy, rainy, and windy weather, as well as when dealing with the effects of altitude and dry mountain air.
Over and over we met other people on the trail whose guides/companies delivered a noticeable lesser experience, and each day we were more grateful to have booked with NHT.
On top of everything, Uttam and Nima proved to be warm, friendly, patient, wonderful trail companions, routinely going above and beyond to deliver a fantastic experience.
If you’re already considering spending the time and money on a Nepal trekking vacation, do yourself a favor and book with Nepal Hiking Team!

Incredible 18-Day Trek to Everest Base Camp and the Cho La and Renjo La Passes
Jos and I started our 18-day trek to Everest Base Camp, the Cho La and Renjo La Passes on the 6th May 2025, and over the course of the journey, we saw the most incredible sights, met the kindest people, and gained a deeper appreciation for the Himalayas.
I honestly cannot recommend our guide Bishal highly enough, he was so knowledgeable about our surroundings, as well as always keeping Jos and me entertained and enthused about our walk. He regularly joined us to play cards, even occasionally winning a game of Monopoly Deal and chatting with us about the day just gone, or the adventures that awaited us. Indra, our porter, was also amazing. I am still so impressed with the ease with which he seemed to carry our bags and race up the mountains. Without him and Bishal, Jos and I would absolutely not have been able to complete our trek, and I am so grateful to them for all they did.
The couple of weeks I spent in the Himalayas, catching peaks at Everest and trekking along incredibly stunning trails, will stay with me forever, and I am so appreciative to Nepal Hiking Team for accommodating such a special experience.

Hard to Describe Such an Incredible Experience
Hard to Describe Such an Incredible Experience in one review. I booked a 14-day trek with Nepal Hiking Team to do EBC and Cho La Pass as a solo traveller. I joined a group of seven, which ended up being the perfect size—big enough to be social, but not so large that it felt overwhelming. Everyone was lovely, with a great mix of ages, nationalities, solo travellers, and friends.
I was honestly so impressed with how smoothly everything went. From airport pickup to the comfortable hotel in Thamel, and the entire trek itself—everything was well organized. Our guide, Ram, was always smiling, full of energy, and kept us motivated on the tough days. Ramgee, our assistant guide, was incredibly kind and even sang beautiful songs while we hiked. The porters were amazing—so helpful and kind. A few times, after dropping our big bags, they even came back to help with daypacks!
The tea houses were cozy and always had good food. Some of us did get sick—kind of expected on this trek—but the guides were great, helping with meds and giving us time to rest. At the end of the trek, flights from Lukla were getting cancelled, but we were somehow on the first flight out. No delays to our travel plans, which was such a relief.
Overall, it was an exceptional, once-in-a-lifetime experience made unforgettable by Nepal Hiking Team. If you’re a solo traveller looking to trek in Nepal, I’d highly recommend this company. Huge thanks to Ganga, Ram, and the whole team!

Highly recommended -an excellent adventure!
An amazing trip with a great group of people!
Ramsaran, our guide, was excellent. He made the trek even more memorable with his compassion, laughs, dancing, friendly personality, and deep knowledge of the trail and culture.
Our assistant guide, Ram-G, and the porters were also incredibly kind and helpful. They played a big role in making sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish.
Although I made it to Everest Base Camp, I had to skip the Chola Pass due to illness. Ramsaran quickly arranged an alternative plan, and everything went smoothly. He made sure we all met up again at a lower altitude to finish the trek together, which meant a lot.
Make sure you book with Nepal Hiking Team—I honestly can’t recommend them enough!

We confirm all reservations and deliver guaranteed Everest Base Camp, Chola Pass, and Gokyo Trek experiences. Still, we recommend backup plans during exceptional situations, including political instability or environmental disasters.
I am a solo traveler. Can I join the Chola Pass Trek with Everest Base Camp group tours?
Of course! We welcome solo trekkers on all our fixed departures. Even if you are the only participant on your chosen date, we will still run the Everest Cho La Pass Trek at individual rates with full support.
Can I book a private trip if I’m traveling with friends, family, or solo?
Yes, we organize private Everest Cho La Pass Treks for families, friends, and solo travelers. Private trips let you pick your own dates and walk at your group's pace, whether it's two people or more. No need to join strangers as the entire trek belongs to your group alone. For solo travelers, the journey is still very much possible, though it does come with an additional cost.
What’s the difference between the Everest Chola Pass Trek and Gokyo - Everest Base Camp (No Chola Pass) itineraries?
The Gokyo–Everest Base Camp route takes a straightforward path through the Gokyo Valley with no technical crossings. The Cho La Pass trek covers identical highlights but includes the challenging high pass crossing at 5,420 meters.
The Gokyo route is suitable for trekkers who want a less demanding experience. You'll get to see beautiful lakes and viewpoints without facing more alpine conditions. This path requires moderate fitness levels and stays on well-established trails.
The Cho La route demands stronger physical preparation. Expect steep climbs, icy sections, and rough high-altitude terrain. Trekkers often need microspikes for safe passage across snow and ice patches. This route is suitable for trekkers who want more challenge alongside the standard EBC experience.

Do I get a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and back?
Direct flights to Lukla operate only during off-peak trekking periods. During busy months (March-May, September-November), flights depart from Ramechhap Airport, requiring a 5-hour drive from Kathmandu.
We typically leave Kathmandu between 1:00 and 2:00 AM to reach Ramechhap for morning departures to Lukla. Specific departure times will be confirmed during your pre-trek meeting.
Can I drive to Ramechhap the night before the Everest Cho La Pass Trek starts?
Yes, private bookings allow you to travel to Ramechhap the evening before your Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp trek begins. Even group trekkers can drive a night before if everyone in the group agrees.
If the flight to Lukla gets canceled or delayed, what are the options?
We offer helicopter transport for $450 per person when flights face cancellation or delays. This option requires unanimous consent from all trek participants. Without complete group agreement on the helicopter alternative, we'll arrange your flight for the following day instead.
Can I take a helicopter flight instead of flying via Ramechhap? I want to avoid the drive.
Yes, helicopter transport from Kathmandu to Lukla is available at roughly USD 450 per person (a shared flight) for a one-way journey. You must make this request beforehand to ensure we can secure helicopter availability for your Everest Cho La Pass trek.

How difficult is the Everest Cho La Pass Trek?
The Everest Cho La Pass trek falls into the moderate to challenging category because of elevated altitudes, rough landscape, and daily hiking. The daily hike lasts around 6-7 hours (covering 10 to 11 kilometers daily). Prior trekking background isn't necessary; maintaining good physical fitness and an active lifestyle is sufficient.
We maintain a steady pace to ensure proper altitude adjustment throughout Sagarmatha National Park.
How many kilometers is the Classic Everest Base Camp Chola Pass Trek?
The Everest Chola Pass Gokyo Valley trek spans 136-140 kilometers (84-86 miles) of dramatic Himalayan terrain, culminating at Kala Patthar's 5,545-meter summit with unparalleled Mt. Everest views.
Starting and finishing in Lukla, this epic route weaves through legendary destinations: the vibrant trading hub of Namche Bazaar, the renowned Everest View Hotel, Tengboche's ancient monastery, the high-altitude settlements of Dingboche and Lobuche, and the remote outpost of Gorak Shep.

Break in your hiking boots early to prevent blisters, and prepare mentally for the challenge ahead. This preparation ensures you'll enjoy the trek rather than just endure it.
Trekker’s Well-Being & Safety
Do I need travel insurance for the Everest Base Camp, Cho La Pas, and Gokyo Lake Trek?
Travel insurance is mandatory for all Everest Cho La Pass trek participants. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters, emergency evacuation, and helicopter rescue services.
Based on feedback from our past trekkers, we recommend these trusted providers: Genki Traveler, AXA Travel Insurance, Allianz Travel Insurance, and World Nomads. These companies have proven reliable when trekkers needed emergency assistance in the mountains.
We've compiled this list from actual trekker experiences to help you choose coverage that works when you need it most.
What safety measures do your guides take on the trek?
Our licensed guides bring decades of high-altitude experience and carry first aid kits plus oximeters to monitor your oxygen levels. We include enough acclimatization days to help your body adjust properly.
If trekkers feel unwell, guides adjust the pace, provide extra rest, or arrange descent as needed. We select reliable teahouses with good hygiene standards and coordinate helicopter evacuations for serious emergencies.
These safety measures come standard with every Everest Cho La Pass Package.
What is the best time for Everest Cho La Pass Trek?
The best months for the Everest Cho La Pass Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, you'll experience stable weather, clear Himalayan views, and good trekking conditions.
Can I hike to Everest Base Camp trek via Chola Pass and Gokyo Valley during summer and winter?
No, we don't recommend trekking during the summer and winter seasons. Summer brings monsoon rains that frequently cancel flights and create muddy, dangerous trails. Winter conditions include icy paths, heavy snowfall, and blocked routes that make trekking risky and uncomfortable.
While these seasons offer fewer crowds, the weather challenges outweigh the benefits. Flight cancellations can extend your trip by days, and winter conditions require extreme caution on already difficult terrain. We strongly suggest sticking to spring and autumn for the safest, most enjoyable Everest Cho La Pass experience.
Do I need vaccines for Everest Cho La Pass trek?
Nepal requires no vaccinations for entry or the Everest Cho La Pass Trek. You might consider rabies vaccination given the stray dogs present in Sherpa villages. Consult your physician for personalized medical advice.
How can I avoid altitude sickness on the Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass Trek?
Maintain a steady walking pace, stay well-hydrated with 4-5 liters of water daily, and stick to our carefully planned acclimatization schedule. Eat balanced meals and avoid alcohol throughout the trek. Our Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass Itinerary includes strategic rest days for proper altitude adjustment.
Speak up immediately if you feel unwell, as our guides regularly monitor oxygen levels and watch for altitude sickness symptoms. Emergency helicopter evacuation remains available when serious situations arise.
Your safety depends on following these guidelines and communicating openly with our team about how you're feeling at each stage.
I’m afraid of suspension bridges. Will that be a problem during the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp trek?
No worries at all! Our experienced guides are happy to assist you across suspension bridges during the Everest Cho La Pass trek. These bridges might feel intimidating at first, but most trekkers find their confidence grows quickly after the initial crossings.

What is the quality of the drinking water on the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp trek?
Several water options exist for the Cho La Pass trek with Everest Base Camp. We recommend using spring water with purification tablets provided by our guide, or bringing a filtered water bottle for convenience. Teahouses also sell boiled water throughout the route.
Bottled water remains available, but we strongly discourage this choice due to high costs and environmental impact.
Customization: Private vs Group (Tips & Cost)
Can I customize my complete Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass itinerary?
Yes! We provide complete customization for private bookings that allows you to adjust pacing, add extra rest days, and include sightseeing tours in Kathmandu. We tailor trips to match your specific preferences. However, the customization options are available only for private trips, not for group departures.

For longer stays, we offer additional day tours to Bhaktapur and Patan, giving you more opportunities to explore Nepal's rich cultural heritage.
When should I tip the guides and porters?

Bring NPR 25,000 to 30,000 for mountain costs during the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp trek, covering Wi-Fi, showers, charging, and snacks. ATMs in Lukla and Namche Bazaar often don't work, so withdraw cash from Kathmandu ATMs before going to the mountains.
