Route Overview of 11 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Short Trek offers a remarkable journey through the breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayas. Your adventure starts upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, where a member of the Nepal Hiking Team (NHT) will greet you and transport you to your hotel. The area around your accommodation buzzes with life, offering fantastic dining, shopping, and exploration opportunities in Nepal's cultural capital.

The next day, you will fly to the picturesque city of Pokhara, famous for its peaceful lakes and stunning mountain views. If you are lucky enough to get a window seat on this flight, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. After you arrive in Pokhara, a jeep will take you to Birethanti, where the actual short Annapurna Base Camp trek will kick in. The first day's trek leads you through lush forests and past waterfalls, ending in the charming village of Ulleri.

As you leave Ulleri behind, you will cross two clear streams before ascending to Nangethanti. The word "thanti" in Nepali means "rest house," a perfect description of this spot. From there, you continue to climb until you reach Ghorepani, situated at 2,880 meters, where you will spend the night preparing for the famous Poon Hill sunrise experience.

The following day, an early hike to Poon Hill offers stunning sunrise views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. After taking in these breathtaking sights from this renowned Himalayan viewpoint, you will return to Ghorepani for breakfast before continuing your Annapurna trek to Chuile.

On the fifth day, the ABC short trek takes you through the Modi Valley to the village of Chomrong, home to the Gurung community. Here, an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) office will check your trekking permits. The trail then descends to the Chomrong Khola river and ascends to your next destination, Sinuwa.

Continuing the short ABC trek in Nepal, you will walk for about 2-3 hours to Kuldighar. Afterward, the trail leads you through a serene bamboo and rhododendron forest toward Deurali. This short ABC trail will lead you on the way to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC), where you walk up the riverbed in the Annapurna Sanctuary. After a short break, you will continue to Annapurna Base Camp, and the up-close views of the Himalayan peaks will take your breath away.

On the eighth day of the Short ABC Trail, you will head back to Chomrong with the same route, passing through Bamboo Village and taking the hot springs at Jhinu Danda. After this, you will take the suspension bridge at Jhinu Danda and drive to Pokhara. In Pokhara, you will enjoy the vibe of the lake city. The trek to the Annapurna region will finish with a flight to Kathmandu.

There, you will have the opportunity to relax or discover more of the cultural treasures the city has to offer before heading home. The Nepal Hiking Team will arrange your transfer to the airport, which will be the last thing you do before cherishing the memories of the short ABC trek.

Instant Annapurna Base Camp Trek - 8 days

The Instant Annapurna Base Camp Trek (8 days) is the shortest route to Annapurna Base Camp, even shorter than this one. In this route, we skip the trekking route to Ghorepani and Poon Hill, resulting in a total of only five trekking days. Instead, we head directly towards Samrung and Jhinu Danda, which leads us to the Annapurna Base Camp.

Walking paths go through red rhododendron blooms, stepped green fields, and old Gurung settlements. Every step shows beautiful culture and stunning natural landscapes to visiting families. Every step shows beautiful culture and stunning natural landscapes to visiting families.

Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek - 18 days

The Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek is a challenging 18-day trek. It includes crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m), one of the world’s highest mountain passes. This classic trek circuit offers the best views and a very close-up experience of the Annapurna region, which can be life-changing. However, this trek is generally not recommended in the winter (December to early March) due to heavy snow, which often makes the pass inaccessible.

Know Before You Go

Best Time for ABC Short Trek

Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is open throughout the year, yet each season offers a taste uniquely its own. Your ideal moment is often shaped by the balance of weather, scenery, and the style of trek you seek.

Spring (March to May): Arguably the finest months to walk, spring serves a bouquet of rhododendron forests, while temperatures float between 5°C and 22°C. Bright, cloudless days deliver crisp, uninterrupted views of the giants that circle the base, and the showy blooms also draw more travelers, which means it is advisable to plan and secure lodgings well ahead of departure.

Autumn (September to November): This is the season that lodges and trails love best, and photographers, too. Meter by meter, travelers revel in productively tangible mountains under cobalt skies. The temperatures range from 7°C to 17°C, which delivers perfect trekking time. Equally alluring are the synchronized festivals of Dashain and Tihar, which sprinkle colorful, joyful rituals along the trails and in the teahouse spoons.

Winter (December to February): The cold is there to be taken seriously, yet it rewards the brave. Daytime readings linger between 9°C and 12°C, while the smallest lodges on the way brace for nights that drop down to -15°C and -20°C in more exposed places. The snow-covered scenery, however, turns every teahouse into a postcard and can be the peace-filled isolation that few trekking routes can boast. Snow makes the landscapes stunning, but it also increases the difficulty. Proper winter clothing and gear are essential for staying warm.

Summer/Monsoon (June to August): Warm and green (18°C–25°C), with lush landscapes and fewer crowds. However, heavy rain can bring leeches, slippery trails, and landslides. Flexible schedules and good rain gear are essential for trekking during this season.

Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek Difficulty

The Annapurna Base Camp short trek is generally rated moderate. It is suitable for anyone with a good level of fitness who can manage long days on steep, uneven trails. You should expect daily walks of 5–7 hours over rocky paths and many stone steps. So, good cardiovascular fitness and strong legs make the trek far more comfortable.

The short itinerary gains altitude quickly (ending around 4,130 m / 13,550 ft), so you’ll notice thinner air. A shorter itinerary typically means larger daily climbs, so be sure to prepare your legs beforehand. Aim for about 5–6 hours of walking or hiking each week, and add stair-climbing with a loaded backpack. Begin regular exercise at least 2–3 weeks prior to your trek. This simple training helps reduce tiredness and lowers the risk of altitude-related problems.

When you trek with Nepal Hiking Team, guides and porters take on most of the hard work. Porters carry your main bags, while guides look after safety and first aid, so you only need a small daypack with essentials. That support makes the walk easier and lets you enjoy the views without worrying about logistics.

With sensible training, careful pacing, and appropriate travel insurance that covers high-altitude evacuation, you can complete the route successfully and easily.

  • Nepal Annapurna Base Camp Trek

We discovered for ourselves why Nepal Hiking Team was the best tour operator in Nepal. Being a group of 6 non-regular hikers with differing fitness levels, and with very restrictive company leave policies, we wrote to NHT (Mr Ganga) to ask if it was possible to climb to Annapurna Base Camp in 9 days. Mr Ganga not only patiently answered our queries (through more than 30 emails!), but he also managed to craft the perfect itinerary for us, including calibrated route lengths each day, and ample R&R time in Kathmandu and Pokhara pre- and post-trek. We greatly appreciated his patience and dedication in making our trek work within our time constraints.

NHT's two guides, Deepak and Bishal, were the best local guides we could ever ask for. They were professional in guiding us through the trek, taking close care of us despite our differing paces, and attending to our every need such as getting food and water promptly. They skillfully adjusted our itinerary on the fly based on our projected paces by calling ahead to guesthouses to plan our accommodations. Most importantly, they were like our great friends chatting to us, keeping our morale high, and accompanying us for great food during our R&Rs Halfway through, when 4/6 of our team developed knee pain from the brutal route, they immediately sourced horses and helped them down the path safe and sound.

I cannot recommend NHT, Mr Ganga, and Mr Deepak / Bishal enough! If we get a chance to return to Nepal, I won't hesitate at all to reach out to them again.

  • Unbelievable 11-Day Trek to Annapurna Base Camp

I can't say enough about the whole team at Nepal Hiking Team. They really made my trek unforgettable. Ganga and will answer any question you might have within a few hours. They picked me up at the airport and arranged everything. ABC is a great trek, and I loved everything about it. I was fortunate enough to accompany Arjun, who was a seasoned guide and an even better person.

Lam, my porter, was great as well. They really go out of their way to personalize the trek based on your needs and interests. I saw many of the other companies along the route, and they all seemed nice. However, it was pretty clear that this company goes even more above and beyond. I would highly recommend them.

  • Annapurna Base Camp Trek - 14 days

Not long ago, I accomplished a trek to Annappurna Base Camp with one of the fantastic guides, Surya Rokaya. Even though the trek to ABC was challenging, the guide and company took fabulous care of us throughout the entire time.

Our guide never walked too far ahead when we were going slow—something we really appreciated, especially after seeing other guides leave their groups behind. The whole trip was smooth from start to finish.

This was my second trek with Nepal Hiking Team, and I’d happily go with them again. I’d recommend them to anyone thinking about trekking in Nepal!

I am still so in awe of the wonderful experience I had in Nepal! Thanks to Nepal Hiking Team, I could solely focus on the trekking (which was really necessary...) and the astounding nature and clear my head like I hoped I could. The itinerary could be customized for me and during the whole experience, I felt very taken care of.

I am very thankful for my guide Bhisma who has been the most reliable, fun and interesting companion who clearly loves what he does. He helped me out when my knee started acting up and always looked out for me in general. If you're lucky, you'll have the pleasure of hearing his fantastic singing voice! Rupesh, my porter, has been very friendly and a great support as well.

  • Great Team! Great Annapurna Base Camp experience!

The experience with Nepal Hiking Team has been very pleasant.

I did the Annapurna Base Camp trek with them from December 2024 to January 2025.

Our guide, Bibek, has been very kind at all times, attentive to our comfort, and very friendly. Always trying to maintain a balance between the abilities and tastes of those of us on the tour. Our porter, too! A nice guy with a lot of strength to carry the luggage of my partner and me.

Regarding the agency, I always had the feeling of trust, I never thought they were trying to rip me off.

On the other hand before opting for Nepal Hiking Team, I searched and compared other options, and without a doubt quality and price this was the best and I was not disappointed.

The tea houses, where we stayed were always good, clean, and as far as possible (always really) we had a single room (but this depends on the season).

On the other hand the agency was always flexible with me, and in the end, I decided to stay a few more days in Pokhara, so I had to modify a little the rest of the accommodations and the agency was always very helpful, at all times they kept me looking for accommodation and transportation, even after finishing the trekking!

Do not hesitate anymore!!! if you are looking for an agency to do your trekking, NEPAL HIKING TEAM is definitely the option.

The Annapurna Base Camp Short trekking route feels moderate for most trekkers. It's just right for physically fit adventures. There would be major uphill and downhill sections requiring good cardiovascular fitness and strong legs for your ABC region experience.

This Short ABC Trail spans about 86-91 km (53-57 miles) from Birethanti to Jhinu Danda. You will trek through magnificent rhododendron forests and amazing alpine lands on the journey.

No official age limits exist for this short ABC trail. We've guided adventurers ranging from 4-year-olds to seniors over 70. Health is more important than age for your trek, so you should be physically fit. We offer specialized programs for seniors and children on this short Annapurna Base Camp Trek. For this trek, children under 16 need parental accompaniment for safety.

Begin training at least two weeks before your ABC short trek. Train with cardio, stair climbing, and loaded pack hikes lasting 5-6 hours. Bed in your boots and strengthen your legs for the short ABC Route. Mental preparation also plays an essential role before and while trekking. It helps in developing strong willpower for the more challenging moments along the trek to the short ABC region trail.

Trekker’s Well-Being & Safety

Yes! The Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek requires travel insurance. And the insurance coverage should include high-altitude trekking up to at least 4,200m, emergency evacuation, and helicopter rescue for your trek. We recommend booking your travel insurance with established insurers like World Nomads, AXA, Allianz, or Genki for this short ABC trek package.

Our licensed guides carry first-aid kits and oximeters to monitor oxygen levels throughout this short ABC trail journey. They're trained for mountain emergencies and select reliable teahouses in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Emergency helicopter evacuations are also arranged when needed for you. However, this may come with a slight cost (generally $450).

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal for your ABC Short Trek. These periods have better visibility of the mountains, consistent weather, and pleasant temperatures for short trekking in the Annapurna Region.

Both summer and winter offer options for trekking, though they are not easy. The monsoon season comes with rain and leeches, whereas winter conditions are icy and snowy. Adventurous trekkers will find these seasons uniquely rewarding for the short trek to Annapurna Base Camp.

For the 11-day trek, keep to a consistent pace, and drink 4–5 liters of water a day. Adhere to the acclimatization plan, have the proper diet, and stay sober. Please inform guides immediately of headaches, dizziness, or illness. They monitor your oxygen levels with oximeters and arrange helicopter evacuation when necessary in the field.

Don't worry about suspension bridges on your trail route to the ABC! Our experienced guides help nervous trekkers, especially at the Jhinu Danda bridge. They provide physical support and encouragement, and most trekkers quickly become comfortable with crossings during their Short ABC Trek.

Trek Preparation and Gear Packing

Your short ABC Trek package includes one experienced porter for every two trekkers, carrying a combined weight of up to 25kg. You'll only need a lightweight daypack for daily essentials, such as water, snacks, a camera, and medications, during the trail. Since porters walk ahead, it is recommended to keep your essential items in your daypack throughout the trek.

Accommodation and Connectivity

Your Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Package Booking includes twin-sharing rooms up to Chhomrong. Above Chhomrong, accommodation shifts to dormitory-style rooms shared with 3-4 other trekkers due to limited facilities at higher elevations during your Quick Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Yes, you can stay connected with Wi-Fi throughout most of the trek! Before you start, pick up local SIM cards from NTC or Ncell in Kathmandu. You can buy NTC and Ncell data packs. This provides you with sufficient connectivity to stay in touch with family and friends, as well as handle any essential business calls.

Higher-altitude teahouses in Annapurna typically charge NPR 200-500 for the charging of electronics. During monsoon months, solar power becomes very unreliable as one goes higher up the mountains. Carry fully charged power banks, with some spare batteries as backup, so that the devices can stay powered throughout the trek.

Western-style and squat toilets are available at most teahouses. Above Sinuwa, mostly squat toilets are available due to the elevation. During the winter months at higher altitudes, it is recommended to use squat toilets.

Standard twin-sharing accommodation is included in your short ABC trekking package. Private rooms incur additional fees, which are subject to availability during your 11 days ABC trek. Beyond Chhomrong, securing single rooms is extremely difficult during busy seasons, even with an additional payment.

Meals and Drinking Water

Teahouses along the route offer a diverse range of cuisine, including Nepali, Indian, Italian, and Chinese dishes. This option remains up until Sinuwa village. Beyond Sinuwa, meat is completely prohibited, and you cannot see any non-veg dishes on the menu either. However, you can choose any food that has been listed on the menu, which, of course, are the vegetarian ones. Desserts and cold drinks are available throughout your short ABC Trek, offering an impressive variety even in remote mountain locations.

Yes! Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are also available in the teahouses and hotels. Important: Remind guides of dietary restrictions or food allergies during the trek so they can communicate directly with lodge kitchens for safe meal preparation.

Several safe water options are available throughout the journey. Natural spring water treated with purification tablets (provided by guides) works best. Filtered water bottles offer added convenience during your trek. Teahouses offer boiled water as an alternative option. Bottled water isn't available in the higher regions to maintain sustainability and avoid pollution on this Annapurna Base Camp short trek.

Customization: Private vs Group (Tips & Cost)

Absolutely! We offer customization for private trek experiences, including pace adjustments, extra acclimatization days, and accommodation preferences. Customization is only available for private bookings, not group departures. Group treks follow standard short ABC package schedules.

We can organize a complete day tour of Kathmandu for $120, either before your Annapurna Base Camp Short trek or after you return. The tour covers the most major sacred temples and other UNESCO World Heritage sites around the city. For a more comprehensive experience, we offer full-day tours to Bhaktapur or Patan for $120 each.

A rule of thumb is to tip your guide and porters after the trek in Pokhara. Consider the amount based on the kind of gratitude you want to show and your budget. It's a small but meaningful token for their hard work and care.

Bring approximately NPR 15,000 for mountain expenses during your trek. This covers Wi-Fi, hot showers, device charging, and trail snacks. Mountain ATMs are unreliable, so withdraw cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting your Brief Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Carry the required cash beforehand for your entire journey.
