10 Days Ghorepani Poon Hill Family Trek Route Overview

The journey begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport. A Nepal Hiking Team representative will meet you, take you to the hotel, and settle you in Kathmandu. You relax, stroll around the markets nearby, or rest up for the family adventure about to take place.

Kathmandu, a city rich in color and history, is the location where we conduct our tour in the first place before the actual trail. Visit Pashupatinath Temple , Swambunath and Boudhanath Stupa, and step into the living history of Kathmandu through Kathmandu Durbar Square. These places, which are short enough to be family-friendly stops, are great for photos and light acclimatization before the adventure.

Further beyond the city, we continue to Pokhara the next morning. Pokhara is the shelter for all self-styled lake citizens of the high-framed Annapurnas. We then drive in a convoy to the trailhead, passing river gorges and cutting through terraced farmland. We have a jeep option for this special family package that skips the 3000+ steps and directly goes up to Ulleri for a more comfortable beginning.

The trail from Ulleri goes past Banthanti and up to Ghorepani, winding through dense, stunning rhododendron forests and myriads of small Gurung villages. The pace is gentle, with daily short stages so that kids and seniors can enjoy the scenery. The village comforts of Ghorepani—shops, bakeries, and warm water—make it a pleasant stop for families.

As dawn breaks, we hike to Poon Hill to watch the sunrise light up gold on the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After breakfast in Ghorepani, we continue through fragrant forests to Tadapani and then descend into the traditional Gurung village of Ghandruk. Village life and grand views from the mountains put together very meaningful cultural moments for the family.

Then you return to Pokhara and stay one more night there. The very next day, you go back to Kathmandu with your pre-booked mode of transportation. This can be a bus drive as standard or a flight if you had an upgrade request earlier. The next day, we arrange your final morning, including the airport transfer, to ensure a smooth and easy departure. For a more customized experience of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Family Trek, connect with the Nepal Hiking Team, as we offers tailored pacing, private departures, and family-focused extras to design memories that last a lifetime.

Trek Alternatives

There are several alternative adventures that you can look into, like the Annapurna Ghorepani Family Poon Hill adventure.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek - 8 days

This Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking package is 2 days shorter trek than this family package. This standard group package for the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is generally recommended for fit people. Even solo trekkers can enjoy this package, letting them join a group for their best hiking experience of Ghorepani and Poon Hill.

The main difference between the family package and the standard package is that the standard package does not include a leisure day in its itinerary. This family trek skips 3000+ stone-step route on the way to Ulleri, so is perfect for families.

Mardi Himal Trek - 9 days

The Mardi Himal Trek is a wonderful option to consider. This hike is an excellent alternative for those looking for a less crowded trekking route. The trail takes you through traditional Nepalese villages and lush forests before ascending to high alpine terrain. The trek offers stunning views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range.

Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek - 11 days

Next, we will discuss the Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek. This trek takes you to the base of one of the highest peaks in the world, Annapurna I. Along the way, you'll pass through picturesque villages, terraced fields, and dense rhododendron forests, all while enjoying panoramic views of the Annapurna range.

Unforgettable Poon Hill Trek with My Daughter – Highly Recommended!

We did a 5-day Poon Hill trek booked through Nepal Trek IL, and it was an amazing experience. Guy, our Israeli contact, was very helpful in planning a route that suited our pace and needs.

In Nepal, we were warmly welcomed by Nepal Hiking Team. Our guide Bibek met us with flower garlands at the airport and took care of us from day one. Along with our porter Suzu, they made sure we were safe, comfortable, and enjoying every moment. The trek was moderately challenging—just right for us—and the team even surprised us with desserts after dinner!

After the trek, Bibek continued to help by organizing our activities in Pokhara, showing real care and professionalism throughout. I highly recommend Nepal Trek IL, Nepal Hiking Team, and especially Bibek. Hope to return soon for another trek!

We recently completed the Annapurna Panorama Trail, and it was an absolutely incredible experience from start to finish! The stunning landscapes, well-planned itinerary, and smooth organization made this trek truly unforgettable.

A huge shoutout to our amazing guide, Ramesh—his knowledge, professionalism, and enthusiasm made the journey even more enjoyable. He kept us well-informed and comfortable the entire way. Our Sherpas, Govind and Sabil, were just as fantastic—so kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. Their support made everything so much easier and more fun.

If you’re thinking about doing this trek, we can’t recommend it enough! The breathtaking views, warm hospitality, and expert guidance made it a truly special adventure. Huge thanks to the entire team for such a fantastic experience!

  • Amazing Nepal Annapurna trek!

Amazing trip with a fantastic guide Bibek. Our porter was also phenomenal and kind. Both kept us on target to the destination but with good breaks, stopping to enjoy the sights and for us to be safe and well cared for.

I booked as a solo but had another solo traveler join and we all had a fun time as a group. It was good to not be the only guest.

It was my birthday during the trek, I wasn't intending to mention it, but the guide and porter found out the day before. Somehow, they managed a birthday cake with my name on it for the next morning and brought it to the top of the hike at Poon Hill. What a surprise and amazing thoughtful gesture.

Truly a trip of a lifetime if you love nature and trekking. Can't recommend this company and team enough.

    Thank you!

From the start, the Nepal Hiking Team was exceptionally accommodating, friendly, and willing to tailor the tour to fit our preferences perfectly.

Our guide, Bhisma Basnet, was outstanding; he demonstrated impressive expertise, shared a wealth of knowledge, and was a pleasure to be around.

I wholeheartedly recommend both the Nepal Hiking Team and Bhisma for anyone considering treks or trips in Nepal.

  • Excellent company with amazing guides & porters

From the first contact, Ganga from Nepal Hiking Team was a pleasure to work with. Great communication and guidance all the way through. As a solo traveler, my main hope was to have an exceptional guide and porter. Deepak Dhakal, my guide, and Ganesh Thapa, my porter, exceeded expectations.

I felt at ease with Deepak immediately—he was friendly, communicated well, and supported me throughout! When I ran out of energy, Deepak and Ganesh even carried my day pack and held my hand when I felt nervous on the descent.

They were an absolute delight and a joy to hike with.

Trek Difficulty: Who Can Trek?

The family hike is generally rated easy to moderate. It is suitable for fit beginners and multi-generation groups when paced properly.

The typical routes for this family package, organized by the Nepal Hiking Team, cover roughly 25–26 km in total. The starting point of the trail route is Ulleri, and the ending point is Kimche.

There’s no official age cutoff. Families from young children (4+) to seniors (70+) have completed the Ghorepani Poon Hill family trek with us. Children under 16 should travel under the guardianship of a parent/guardian.

Start light cardio and stair-climbing 2–3 weeks ahead, add a couple longer walks with a loaded daypack, and break in your boots. Strengthening the legs and core muscles helps maintain a gentle upward pace during the trek. It is equally important to have a positive mindset and pacing during the trek.

Trekker’s Well-Being & Safety

Travel insurance is required for this family trek. The insurance policy should have a provision for trekking up to at least 3,210 m, emergency evacuation, and helicopter rescue, which is mandatory for this family trek. Choose a plan that covers high-altitude trekking explicitly.

We recommend international insurance providers such as Genki Traveler, AXA Travel Insurance, Allianz Travel Insurance, or World Nomads. They are aware of the specific risks associated with high-altitude trekking.

We have compiled a list of travel insurance providers based on honest feedback from our past clients. We hope this will help you better understand the available options.

Licensed guides by the Nepal Hiking Team carry first-aid kits and pulse oximeters. They also pass through well-established protocols of evacuation. Other responsibilities include monitoring the well-being of the group during family trekking and taking immediate action as needed.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal for clear mountain views and comfortable trekking. Spring brings rhododendron blooms; autumn delivers the clearest Himalayan panoramas. We can advise on seasonal variations when you book.

The trek to Ghorepani and Poon Hill can also be done in summer and winter. Nevertheless, each season has its own set of problems.

No trek-specific vaccines are mandatory. But you can discuss rabies and other vaccine advice with your doctor since you’ll be in rural areas or are concerned about stray animals.

The risk of altitude sickness is relatively low at Poon Hill’s altitude, but not zero. Slow pacing, hydration, and resting reduce risk. Our guides will monitor for symptoms and respond if anyone shows signs of altitude sickness.

You’ll cross a few suspension bridges (e.g., near Tikhedhunga). Our experienced guides help anxious trekkers with close support. After a few crossings, most guests and trekkers feel more confident.

Trek Preparation and Gear Packing

Porters are provided by us for the family trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill. A single porter typically carries up to about 25 kg and can share luggage for two trekkers if needed. This is a great option for families who want to travel light.

Yes, you can store your extra luggage in hotels in Kathmandu or Pokhara. We offer secure luggage storage so families can start the trek with only the essentials.

Yes, we provide essentials (sleeping bag, down jacket, duffel) for the Ghorepani poon hill family trek.

Yes, we provide a completion certificate for this “Ghorepani Poon Hill Family Trek.” This is a way of celebrating the family achievement with a small gift pack from Nepal Hiking Team.

Accommodation and Connectivity

We book teahouses and guesthouses that typically offer twin-share rooms with clean bedding and family-friendly meals. Private rooms or upgrades may be available and are subject to seasonal availability.

You can stay connected with Wi-Fi in the hotels for much of the route. Also, you can use a local NTC/Ncell SIM and data pack for connectivity on the trail. However, coverage may be patchy in remote stretches. Some teahouses that we use offer paid Wi-Fi.

Yes, most teahouses at higher altitudes offer device charging for a small fee, typically ranging from approximately NPR 200 to NPR 500 per device. Bringing a charged power bank is strongly recommended for family hikes.

Standard packages are twin-share, but we can sometimes arrange private rooms for an extra charge. During high seasons, they’re harder to secure, so book early if privacy matters.

Many teahouses along the Ghorepani Poon Hill Family trail route offer Western-style toilets.

Meals and Drinking Water

Teahouses and guesthouses we work with serve varied menus (Nepali, Indian, simple continental), snacks, desserts, and hot drinks. You can choose any meal from the menu. If you inform us in advance, we can usually accommodate special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free.

Along the Ghorepani trek, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals are available. If you have a special preference or any kind of food allergy, you should let your guide know about it. Thus, they would be able to inform teahouses in advance and provide the appropriate meals in this regard during the travels along the trail.

Yes, safe options include boiled water available at teahouses and natural spring water that should be purified (water tablets or filtered bottles). Guides often carry purification tablets for family trekking groups.

Customization: Private vs Group (Tips & Cost)

Of course. We have specifically designed the trek itinerary for families on this private trip. You can easily customize private family treks for pace, extra rest days, or family-focused activities.

Yes, we add on full-day tours to Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, or Patan. Please feel free to ask about pricing and inclusions when booking.

Tipping is customary at the trip's end (often at Pokhara). You can tip any amount, varying by service level and your budget level. For family groups, you can pool tips and present them together. It is an appreciated gesture for excellent service on family trekking trips.

You are expected to carry a minimum of Rs. 15,000 per person for extras like device charging, hot showers, snacks, and Wi-Fi. ATMs may not be reliable on the trail, so withdraw in Pokhara or Kathmandu before departure.
