Everest Gokyo Lake Trek Overview - 15 days

While traveling on the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, you’ll pass through one of the most spectacular routes of the Khumbu. The journey is the perfect blend of tranquility and adventure, truly embodying the serenity of the Gokyo Lakes in Nepal. This holy lake is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and is a highlight of the Gokyo Lake trek Nepal. You’ll have the chance to be in the presence of this revered site. It is also considered one of the Five Sacred Lakes of Nepal, located on the world’s highest-altitude lakes.

As you traverse these trails on the Gokyo Valley Trek, you’ll enter Sagarmatha National Park, one of the trek’s standout highlights. The conservation area is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. The greenery, along with the wildlife, will attract you from green alpine vegetation to Himalayan snowcocks and grazing yaks. We welcome all clients to join this Gokyo Lake trekking experience.

Our standard, 15-day Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary allows you to experience the natural and cultural richness of the Everest region. The warm hospitality of the Sherpa people, breathtaking mountains, and the calm beauty of the Gokyo Lakes will add lasting bliss to your trek.

Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking Route Overview

The 15-day Gokyo Lake Trekking package will begin after you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. You will then be transferred to your hotel near Thamel, Kathmandu. You will have a brief meeting about your trip and then rest to prepare for it. Another day, you will again stay in Kathmandu to prepare for your trek or explore a few of the Kathmandu Valley's attractions.

After your second night in Kathmandu, you take an exciting flight to Lukla Airport in the Himalayas. However, during the peak season (March to May and October to November), flights go through Ramechhap. If your flight is redirected from Ramechhap to Lukla, a 5-hour drive from Kathmandu will take you to Ramechhap first. Regardless of the route taken, the flight to Lukla is an unforgettable experience in itself.

The actual trek by foot begins here. From Lukla, you will pass through the small villages of the Everest Region, along with the flowing Dudh Koshi River. You will reach your first destination, Phakding. This marks the start of your Gokyo Lake trekking Nepal adventure, offering a complete Himalayan experience through Gokyo Valley.

The following day, you will reach another Sherpa's biggest trading hub, Namche Bazaar. You will have two nights at Namche Bazaar. To adapt to the high altitude, you will visit the Everest View Hotel, the highest in the world. Then, for the following hikes, you'll pass through the villages of Dole, Machhermo, and others along the Gokyo Valley Trek route.

The most exciting day is the hike from Machhermo to the Gokyo Lakes in Nepal, part of the world's highest-altitude lakes trek. You will be mesmerized when you reach Gokyo and witness the serene waters yourself on this highest freshwater lakes trek in Nepal. This is one of the five sacred lakes in Nepal and a highlight of the Gokyo Lake trek.

After that, you will ascend to Gokyo Ri (5,360 m); this is why we sometimes also refer to it as the Gokyo Ri Trek Nepal. From this Gokyo Ri summit, panoramic views of Mt Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Mahalangur Himal, and the Ngozumpa Glacier can be witnessed. Following the hike, you'll return to the valley and have the rest of the day for yourself.

With this, the descent begins from Gokyo to Dole, then to Namche Bazaar, and finally to Lukla. Before the flight from Lukla, you can feel a deep attachment to the lovely Sherpa people, the Himalayas, and the surrounding natural features that make this trek so special. On day 13, you will take a flight back to Kathmandu. The following day, you can explore the city and enjoy some shopping for friends and family in your spare time.

On the date of your flight to your home country, you will transfer to the airport three hours before your international departure.

If you wish to go on this exciting Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, contact us. We can also arrange your trip according to your preferences. Join us now for this 15 Day Gokyo Lake Trek, create unforgettable memories, and experience the highest freshwater lakes trek on earth.

Then, the trail continues to climb along the side of the valley, high above the river, crossing sandy spurs to Machhermo at (4470m). It is said that in 1974, Machhermo was the site of a famous Yeti incident, where three yaks were killed and a Sherpa woman was attacked. It remains the most widely reported Yeti encounter, yet no one truly knows if it is a real story or not.

You will stay overnight at a guesthouse in Machhermo and then prepare for the next day at Gokyo Lake.

As you continue, the valley widens and the trail passes through the small settlement of Pangka (4,390m), giving a glimpse into local high-altitude life. The path then descends briefly to the riverbank before starting the challenging climb up the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. The climb is steep and follows winding switchbacks next to a lively mountain stream.

You will reach the first lake in the Gokyo Lakes series after climbing and following the trail. A family of Brahminy ducks often visits this peaceful place, adding a touch of wildlife charm.

Know Before You Go

Best Time for Gokyo Lake Trek

We want our clients to get the most out of the Khumbu zone. Hence, we recommend the best seasons for the Everest Gokyo Lakes Trek.

The ideal time for the Everest Gokyo Lake trek is during the spring and autumn seasons.

Spring (March–May): One of the two best seasons to trek. Daytime temperatures on sunny days typically range from 5 to 15°C (41–59°F), while nights can fall to around −5°C (23°F) at Gokyo elevations. Spring brings clear skies, long daylight hours, and flowering rhododendrons for stunning views and great photography.

Autumn (September–November): The other prime season. Daytime temperatures usually sit between 5°C and 12°C (41°F and 54°F), with nighttime lows around −5°C to −10°C (23°F to 14°F). Air is generally dry, and visibility is excellent, which provides the most reliable window for panoramic mountain views.

Winter (December–February): Quiet trails and often very clear skies, but cold conditions. Daytime temperatures typically range from −2°C to 8°C (28–46°F) depending on the sun and elevation. Some nights commonly drop below −10°C and can reach −15°C (5°F) or colder near the Gokyo region.

Summer (June–August): Summer brings the warmest temperatures, but frequent rain leaves trails wet and slippery. Daytime temperatures are 10–18°C (50–64°F) with nights around 0–5°C (32–41°F). Heavy cloud and rain often obscure peaks; trails become slippery, and landslide risk at lower elevations increases.

Everest Gokyo Lake Trek Difficulty

Compared with longer or higher routes such as the Everest Base Camp Chola Pass Trek and the High Passes Trek, the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is generally considered moderate. The route includes steep uphill and downhill sections, but with an experienced guide and a sensible Gokyo Lake trek itinerary, most trekkers manage it comfortably.

The main risk is altitude sickness, a serious concern on any trip that reaches high elevations, including the world’s highest-altitude lakes trek and the Highest Freshwater Lakes Trek in Nepal. Follow correct acclimatization protocols and take symptoms seriously.

Our trekking leaders are trained to manage altitude-related issues. They will schedule acclimatization stops, monitor your oxygen level daily, and advise on pacing in high-altitude zones. These measures are part of our approach to delivering a complete Himalayan Experience in the Gokyo Valley Trek, with safety as our top priority.

Quick tip: Although the Gokyo Lake trek difficulty is moderate, regular exercise and good physical fitness before the trip will make your experience far more enjoyable.

Unusually high-altitude life

The Gokyo Lakes sit at an elevation above 5,000 m. Their clear waters do not support fish; instead, tiny plankton and hardy invertebrates such as flatworms and aquatic insects are the main marine life. Researchers have even identified a new single-celled algae species in Gokyo Cho.

Rare high-altitude flora is supported by tiny wetland pockets along the shore, and alpine plants and insects thrive there despite the harsh environment. Waterbirds that breed in the Gokyo valley, such as Brahminy ducks (Chakhewa in Nepali), are also drawn to the lakes. These fragile ecosystems demonstrate how life persists at the border between cold and elevation.

Why Gokyo Matters

Gokyo is more than just a picturesque destination for hikers. It is a region with a vibrant local culture and a valuable indicator of environmental change. The meltwater from the lakes nourishes the rivers in the Koshi/Ganges system, which sustains millions of people downstream. Scientists use the lake sediments, which contain records of previous climates, to examine changes in flood risk, water availability, and glacier size.

Do you want to know more about the Gokyo Lake? We have prepared this Gokyo Lake blog, which provides you with the details you need to know about this wonderful high-altitude lake.

Travellers‘ Reviews

  • Everest Gokyo Lake Trek

Our group of 4 (all over 50 years old) did a private Gokyo Lake Trail. Everything from booking to hiking was very professionally organized. Thanks to Ganga – he organized the trip.

We had an amazing guide, Dhurba. He managed our pace (we were not fast hikers) and made sure things were prepared during tea breaks, breakfast, and dinner. Also, thanks to our porters, Sandib and Nabin. They carried most of our gear, and we only had to carry our day backpacks.

The hike to Gokyo Ri and the trail via Renjo La Pass were the highlights of the trek. The weather cooperated, and we saw big mountains – Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and others. We met nice people along the trail (some wanted to talk and some didn’t, but that’s ok).

Being in the place, meeting people, seeing the mountains, hiking, and being one with nature – it feels like I was reborn after the trip.

We decided on the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek because the daily hikes are manageable (below 10k for most of the days, which was important for our group), and the hike is less crowded compared to the Everest Base Camp route. As a bonus, we returned via the Renjo La Pass.

The two most challenging days were the hike from Namche to Dole (lots of elevation gain) and the hike from Langden to Namche – it was the longest hike of the trip.

  • Highly Recommend

I would highly recommend using Nepal Hiking Team — 5 stars! This outfitter was recommended by a friend who had a great experience, and they didn’t disappoint.

We did the Gokyo Lake Trek with Everest Base Camp in April this year. Although we couldn’t make it to Gokyo due to sickness, Shyam (our guide) was amazing. He helped us adjust the itinerary, and we were still able to reach Everest Base Camp!

Shyam did a fantastic job, especially during the times when we weren’t feeling our best. If you're signing up for a trek, I highly recommend requesting him as your guide — it's worth it!

It was also incredibly reassuring, especially in a foreign country, to have a guide meet us at the airport and help with every step of the journey. That took a lot of the stress and planning off our shoulders and made the entire experience far more enjoyable.

If you're debating which outfitter to go with for EBC — look no further. Sign up with Nepal Hiking Team!

  • Amazing Gokyo Ri trip

We did the Tour to Gokyo Ri and really made it to the top, thanks to our wonderful guide Hari!! He sung and daced and made usw easily reach the top at 5300 m altitude even with our 11 year old son Emil.

The Company organized everything perfectly for us, so that we could enjoy our vacation from the first moment we arrived in Kathmandu until our leave. We can definitely recommend Nepal Hiking and our guide Hari to everyone, especially families travelling with children. Everything was safe and we could enjoy. Absolutely reliable, as we are used to back home in Switzerland.

  • 2025 Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake trekking

Truly amazing experience at EBC. Hard to explain how epic and gorgeous the Himalayas are. Really happy that we chose Nepal Hiking Team.

From the beginning of the trek to the end, everything was very well organised. The arrangements made by Ganga and his team were great. The trip was made so special by our outstanding trekking leader Dilman and our porter Sulman, who looked after us incredibly well - he made sure we were pacing ourselves, ate properly, and were ascending safely.

Dilman really knows the mountains and is a fantastic guide for a trek like this, and was a lovely person to spend time with. The other Nepal Hiking team guides who were looking after groups on the same route as us were a fantastic bunch and created a strong team spirit. We met some great people from the US, Taiwan, and NZ, and there was good camaraderie and lots of fun. Accommodation was well chosen, and food was good and very plentiful! The hotels in Kathmandu, both before and after the trip, were also very good.

This is a great adventure, and also a tough trek that can be physically demanding and requires stamina. However, we felt really well-supported and safe with the brilliant Nepal Hiking Team. If we could do it again tomorrow, we would!

  • Gokyo Lakes/EBC Nepal Hiking Team is the best

We had an incredible experience with Nepal Hiking Team, especially with our guide, Rudra.

The trip was fully flexible. We originally planned to do Gokyo, EBC, and Island Peak, but during the trek, we decided to change plans and just do Gokyo. It was no problem at all—they adjusted everything for us without any hassle.

We had a medical emergency, and Rudra, along with the Nepal Hiking Team, took care of everything. They arranged a helicopter back to Kathmandu, contacted our insurance, and even stayed with us at the hospital. We felt fully supported the whole time.

Rudra really understood us. He adjusted the pace to match what we were comfortable with—we never felt rushed and could enjoy the views. He also took lots of photos for us and made sure we didn’t miss any of the good viewpoints.

At the teahouses, Rudra handled it all—getting us the best rooms, taking care of food, and making sure we were comfortable.

Overall, it was an amazing experience. We’d recommend Nepal Hiking Team to anyone.

Transportation and Lukla Flights

Yes, you can get direct flights between Kathmandu and Lukla. But the flights are generally available during the low season. During peak months, such as March to May and September to November, you’ll need to travel to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap.

It takes about a five-hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechaap. You’ll leave Kathmandu between 1 and 2 AM to catch the morning flight to Lukla from Ramechhap. We will share the flight times and details with you during the pre-trek briefing.

If the flight to Lukla gets canceled or delayed, a helicopter ride can be arranged for an extra $450 per person. To make this possible, agreement from each group member is required. If even one person chooses not to take the helicopter, we will reschedule the flight for the following day.

Trek Difficulty: Who Can Trek?

The Gokyo Lake Trekking route is considered a moderate trek due to its challenging terrain and high altitude. The route includes steep uphill and downhill sections, including the climb to Gokyo Ri summit.

The Gokyo Valley Lake Trail, starting from and ending in Lukla, is about 92-97 km. To cover this distance, hikers typically spend about 5-6 hours each day hiking over the course of 10 days at a stable pace.

There is no official age limit for this Everest Gokyo Trip. We have already successfully guided trekkers of all ages, ranging from 4 years to 70 years old.

That being said, good health and fitness remain essential for this type of high-altitude trek. We care about your health and safety. Children under 15 must travel accompanied by their parents.

We recommend that you start your training 4 to 6 weeks before your trek to the Everest Gokyo Region. Focus on heart and lung workouts such as stair climbing and jogging. Weekly hikes of 4 to 5 hours, carrying a loaded backpack, can make a significant difference in building your endurance and overall fitness.

Trekker’s Well-Being & Safety

Travel insurance is required for this Gokyo Lake Trek. Your travel insurance policy should cover trekking activities up to 5400 meters and include an emergency evacuation. We recommend companies that operate globally, like Genki Traveler, AXA Travel Insurance, Allianz Travel Insurance, or World Nomads.

For your convenience, we have prepared a list of insurance companies based on recommendations from trekkers who have traveled with us before.

Our licensed guides carry first aid kits and use oximeters to monitor your oxygen levels along the trail regularly. This allows them to spot all the early signs of altitude sickness and act quickly.

Your Everest Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary also includes an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar, allowing your body to adjust properly. If anyone feels unwell, we change the pace, take extra rest, or arrange a safe descent when necessary.

To ensure comfort and hygiene, we select guesthouses and teahouses with a strong reputation for cleanliness and reliability. In the event of any serious emergency, we can also arrange helicopter evacuations.

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek. These seasons offer stable weather and clear skies. Not only is the weather at its best, but the trail paths are also at their best during these seasons.

Yes, you can still trek during summer and winter, but it is not so easy. The summer months often cause delays, especially with flights. The trails are often wet and muddy. In winter, you’ll have to walk through icy and snowy paths, and snowfall can block the path in some areas.

That said, these seasons can be perfect for those who enjoy peaceful trekking without the usual crowds in the Gokyo Region. Our team runs this peaceful Everest Gokyo Lake Trail with the right gear and careful preparations year-round.

To reduce the chances of altitude sickness on the Gokyo Lake Trail, we will walk at a steady pace and drink plenty of water (4 to 5 liters a day). It is also recommended to follow the acclimatization plan and avoid alcohol. Our Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary includes an acclimatization day to help your body adjust.

Please let your guides know immediately if you ever feel unwell. And they will monitor your oxygen levels regularly with an oximeter and watch for any warning signs of altitude problems.

Yes, our Gokyo Lake trekking itinerary includes an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar. This rest day is designed to help your body adapt to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

Trek Preparation & Gear

Our porter will carry the shared luggage for two trekkers (maximum 25 kg). You only need to carry a small daypack. Because the porter usually walks ahead, you can please keep your essentials in your backpack. The essentials might include a water bottle, phone, camera, and snacks.

On the Everest Gokyo Lakes trek, Lukla flights normally permit 15 kg per person. Depending on available space, the airline may impose an excess baggage fee or reschedule your bag if it exceeds this limit.

Yes, you can store additional luggage at the Kathmandu hotel. Your bags can be left at the hotel prior to the trek and picked up upon your return from the Gokyo Valley Trek. This arrangement enables you to hike the Everest Gokyo Lake trail with just the necessities.

Accommodation & Connectivity

We provide twin-share lodges with basic comforts, having proper beds, mattresses, and clean sheets. In lower villages like Lukla and Phakding (and around Namche), many teahouses offer private bathrooms and hot showers. As you move higher beyond Namche, facilities become simpler, with shared toilets and more basic rooms.

Yes, most hotels and lodges provide Wi-Fi. You can also purchase NTC or Ncell SIM cards in Kathmandu for mobile data. Data cards from Nepal Airlink are available at select teahouses, although the supply may be limited. The network is generally reliable up to Namche Bazaar. But connections may drop once you cross the Namche area.

Around the Gokyo Valley, the connection is generally unstable.

Yes, most teahouses offer device charging for around NPR 200–500 per device. Because high-altitude solar power can depend on the weather, bringing a power bank is a good backup.

Yes, Western-style toilets are available at most teahouses in Lukla, Phakding, Namche, and along much of the route. In winter, however, some higher-elevation facilities may switch to squat toilets if pipes freeze.

Our standard package includes twin-sharing rooms. If you prefer a private room, it’s available, subject to availability, for an additional USD 250.

Meals & Drinking Water

Teahouse menus offer a wide range of options, including Nepali, Indian, Italian, and Chinese dishes, as well as desserts and cold drinks. You can order any meal from the menu according to your preferences. Meals are cooked fresh and designed to keep you energized for high-altitude trekking.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices are available throughout the Gokyo Valley Trek.

Please inform us and your guide in case of any food allergies and special dietary needs. This way, we can ensure you receive safe and appropriate meals along the route.

You have a few safe options for drinking water. We recommend using spring water after treating it with the purification tablets provided by your guide or carrying a filtered water bottle for convenience. Boiled water is also available for purchase at teahouses. Buying bottled water is the least preferred option because it is expensive and creates plastic waste.

Customization: Private vs Group (Tips & Cost)

Yes, you can completely customize this Everest Gokyo Lake Trail. According to your request, we can reorganize the pacing, add rest days, and also include a Kathmandu exploration tour. We tailor the trips according to your preferences. However, this option to customize the Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary is only available for private trips.

Yes, we can arrange a Kathmandu day tour for a certain charge, before or after your Gokyo Trek. On this day, we’ll take you to some of the holiest sites and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu. However, if you decide to extend your trip by more than a day, we’ll be delighted to provide you with our Bhaktapur and Patan day tours.

Tipping the guides and porters is expected in Lukla as you bid them farewell. You can award them a tip based on your budget, satisfaction, and quality of the service. It is optional, but that being said, providing a tip is a form of appreciation for their hard work to ensure your comfortable journey.

We suggest carrying around NPR 25,000 to cover the Everest Gokyo Lake Trail. The expenses may include services such as Wi-Fi, showers, charging, and snacks.

You can already withdraw this amount from Kathmandu’s ATM. This is suggested because the ATMs may not be reliable (sometimes) above Lukla and Namche Bazaar at times.
