Purpose and Scope
Nepal Hiking Team (NHT) is committed to conducting excursions in a manner that protects Nepal's natural and cultural heritage, respects local communities, supports responsible tourism, and minimizes negative environmental and social impacts. This policy establishes the sustainability and responsible-conduct requirements applicable to all excursions organized, operated, marketed, or purchased by NHT.
The policy applies to trekking, hiking, cultural and heritage visits, community-based tourism, wildlife and nature activities, national park and conservation-area excursions, rafting and other water-based activities, adventure activities, mountain flights, helicopter excursions, homestays, and other activities arranged for NHT travelers. It applies equally to activities operated directly by NHT and to activities delivered by third-party suppliers or excursion providers.
All relevant employees, guides, tour leaders, suppliers, partner agencies, and excursion providers are expected to comply with this policy and with applicable Nepalese legislation, destination regulations, protected-area requirements, and recognized sustainability requirements.
Sustainable Excursion Principles
NHT shall select and operate excursions with consideration for their environmental, social, cultural, and economic impacts. Excursions that cause significant or unacceptable harm to people, animals, biodiversity, cultural heritage, or natural resources shall not be promoted or knowingly arranged by NHT.
NHT shall prioritize activities that provide appropriate benefits to local communities and contribute to the protection of natural and cultural heritage. Where practical, NHT shall support locally owned accommodation, food services, products, guides, community experiences, and other services that contribute to the local economy.
All excursions shall respect applicable laws, protected-area regulations, local destination-management measures, human rights, and cultural practices. NHT shall also consider sustainability risks when developing new excursions or selecting destinations and shall modify, suspend, or discontinue activities where significant negative impacts cannot reasonably be controlled.
Excursion Providers and Suppliers
NHT shall communicate its sustainability expectations to third-party excursion providers and relevant suppliers. Providers engaged by NHT are expected to operate in accordance with applicable legal, environmental, social, labor, safety, and animal-welfare requirements.
NHT shall give appropriate consideration to providers that demonstrate responsible environmental and social practices. Where relevant, sustainability requirements may be incorporated into supplier agreements, contracts, provider guidelines, or other formal communication. Providers are expected to maintain required licenses, permits, registrations, and professional qualifications and to cooperate with NHT's sustainability monitoring and corrective-action procedures.
Excursion providers must respect local communities and cultural heritage, prevent child exploitation and other forms of abuse, avoid discrimination and harassment, protect natural resources, manage waste responsibly, and maintain appropriate safety standards. Providers shall inform their guides and staff of relevant sustainability requirements and report significant environmental, social, wildlife, safety, or other sustainability incidents to NHT.
Cultural Heritage and Community Responsibility
NHT shall conduct cultural and community-based excursions with respect for local traditions, religious practices, indigenous communities, heritage sites, and community privacy. Guides and tour leaders shall provide travelers with appropriate information before visiting culturally sensitive locations and shall explain relevant local customs and restrictions.
Travelers shall be encouraged to seek permission before photographing people where appropriate and shall not enter restricted, sacred, or privately managed areas without authorization. NHT shall not knowingly promote activities that disrupt religious ceremonies, interfere with normal community life, damage cultural heritage, or involve the removal, destruction, or inappropriate handling of cultural, religious, archaeological, or historical objects.
Where appropriate, NHT shall promote locally produced food, handicrafts, community services, and other legitimate local products and experiences in a manner that provides fair and appropriate economic benefits to destination communities.
Natural Heritage and Protected Areas
NHT recognizes the ecological sensitivity of Nepal's mountain, forest, wetland, river, and protected-area environments. Excursions conducted in national parks, conservation areas, protected landscapes, forests, and other environmentally sensitive locations shall comply with applicable regulations and management requirements.
NHT shall obtain required permits and entrance permissions and shall ensure that guides and travelers are informed of relevant destination rules. Operations shall seek to prevent littering, unnecessary disturbance of vegetation and wildlife, damage to geological features, contamination of water sources, and inappropriate use of fire, fuel, and other natural resources.
NHT shall encourage responsible use of trails and facilities and shall follow local requirements for sanitation, waste disposal, camping, water use, and access to environmentally sensitive areas.
Wildlife and Animal Welfare
NHT does not support excursions involving the exploitation, abuse, or inappropriate treatment of animals. Wildlife activities arranged by NHT shall be conducted in a manner that minimizes disturbance to wild animals and respects applicable conservation requirements.
Travelers shall be instructed not to feed, touch, chase, corner, capture, or otherwise interfere with wildlife. Wildlife shall be observed from appropriate distances and in accordance with instructions provided by guides, park authorities, or wildlife professionals.
NHT shall not knowingly promote the purchase, sale, consumption, or trade of products derived from protected or illegally traded wildlife. Activities involving captive animals shall be assessed for legal, welfare, and sustainability considerations before being offered to travelers.
Sustainable Trekking Practices
Trekking is a principal excursion activity of NHT and takes place in environmentally and culturally sensitive mountain destinations. NHT therefore requires trekking operations to follow responsible practices appropriate to each destination.
NHT shall minimize waste generated during trekking activities and encourage travelers to use reusable water bottles and other reusable items where practical. Trekking staff shall be provided with appropriate waste bags where required, and waste shall not be abandoned along trekking routes. Disposal shall follow local facilities and protected-area requirements, with particular care taken to prevent contamination of rivers, springs, lakes, and other water sources.
Guides, porters, staff, and travelers shall use established or designated trails where required and avoid unnecessary damage to vegetation, geological features, wildlife habitats, and cultural sites. Natural objects, plants, rocks, religious objects, and other features of the destination shall not be removed.
NHT shall provide trekking staff with appropriate working conditions in accordance with applicable company policies and legal requirements. This includes fair and timely remuneration, appropriate insurance and safety provisions, suitable clothing and equipment for the working environment, appropriate accommodation and meals during assignments, reasonable workload and porter-load requirements, and access to relevant safety and first-aid provisions.
Guide and Tour Leader Responsibilities
Guides and tour leaders are responsible for implementing relevant sustainability requirements during excursions and for communicating appropriate standards of conduct to travelers. Before or during an excursion, they shall explain applicable environmental, cultural, wildlife, safety, and community requirements according to the destination and activity.
Guides and tour leaders shall encourage responsible waste management, prevent inappropriate interaction with wildlife, respect local communities and religious sites, and address inappropriate traveler conduct where necessary. They shall also report significant environmental, cultural, social, safety, or sustainability incidents and communicate traveler complaints or concerns through the appropriate NHT reporting channels.
Traveler Code of Conduct
Travelers participating in NHT excursions are expected to respect the environment, local communities, cultural heritage, wildlife, guides, porters, drivers, and other service providers throughout their journey.
Travelers shall follow designated trails and local environmental regulations, dispose of waste responsibly, avoid unnecessary use of disposable products, and refrain from removing plants, rocks, cultural objects, religious items, or other natural or cultural features. They should use water and other local resources responsibly and follow instructions provided by NHT representatives and local authorities.
Travelers are expected to respect local customs, religious practices, traditions, and community privacy. Appropriate dress should be observed at religious and culturally sensitive sites, and permission should be sought before photographing people where appropriate. Restricted areas shall not be entered without authorization, and religious or cultural objects shall not be touched, moved, or removed without permission.
During wildlife activities, travelers shall maintain an appropriate distance from animals and shall not feed, touch, chase, capture, or deliberately disturb them. Travelers should not purchase products made from protected or endangered wildlife.
Travelers are also expected to respect local residents and their daily activities. They should not enter private property without permission or engage in behavior that may disrupt community life. NHT discourages direct giving of money, food, or gifts to children in circumstances where this may encourage begging or school absenteeism and instead encourages appropriate support through responsible community initiatives.
Sensitive Excursions
NHT shall provide additional guidance for excursions involving particularly sensitive cultural, environmental, wildlife, or community locations. These may include religious and heritage sites, indigenous and traditional communities, national parks and conservation areas, wildlife-viewing activities, glacial and high-altitude environments, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and other locations with significant ecological or cultural sensitivity.
The level of guidance and control applied to an excursion shall reflect the nature and sensitivity of the destination. Guides, providers, and travelers shall follow destination-specific requirements established by NHT, local authorities, protected-area management bodies, or other relevant organizations.
Excursion Selection and Sustainability Assessment
NHT shall consider relevant sustainability factors when developing or introducing new excursions. These considerations may include environmental impacts, cultural and heritage impacts, community benefits, wildlife and animal-welfare considerations, safety requirements, waste and resource-management requirements, applicable legislation, and the sustainability practices of proposed providers.
Where an excursion is found to create significant negative impacts that cannot reasonably be mitigated, NHT shall consider modifying the activity, changing the provider, introducing additional controls, suspending the activity, or discontinuing the excursion.
Communication and Training
NHT shall communicate this policy and relevant sustainability requirements to employees, guides, tour leaders, suppliers, excursion providers, and partner agencies according to their responsibilities.
Relevant personnel shall receive appropriate guidance or training concerning environmental protection, cultural sensitivity, wildlife and animal welfare, traveler conduct, waste management, destination requirements, and incident reporting. Travelers shall receive relevant sustainability information through pre-trip communication, briefings, guide instructions, written information, or other appropriate customer communication channels.
Monitoring and Corrective Action
NHT shall monitor implementation of this policy through operational reviews, guide and staff feedback, supplier assessments, traveler feedback, incident reports, complaints, and other relevant information.
Where non-compliance is identified, NHT shall assess the issue and determine appropriate corrective action. Depending on the nature and seriousness of the issue, corrective action may include additional guidance, staff or provider training, operational changes, increased monitoring, modification of an excursion, suspension of a provider, or termination of a supplier relationship.
Serious or repeated non-compliance shall be escalated to the responsible management representative for review and appropriate action.
Documentation and Records
NHT shall maintain appropriate records demonstrating the implementation of this policy. These may include excursion and provider inventories, supplier agreements and sustainability requirements, provider assessments, staff and guide training records, traveler sustainability briefings, excursion guidelines, permits and regulatory documentation, incident and complaint records, corrective-action records, and supplier monitoring records.
Records shall be maintained in accordance with NHT's document-control and record-retention procedures and shall be made available for internal review or sustainability assessment where required.
Responsibilities
The Managing Director has overall responsibility for approving this policy and providing management support for its implementation. The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for coordinating implementation, maintaining relevant sustainability documentation, communicating requirements to relevant departments and providers, and coordinating monitoring and corrective actions.
The Operations Team is responsible for incorporating sustainability requirements into excursion planning and operation and for communicating relevant requirements to service providers. Guides and tour leaders are responsible for implementing destination-specific requirements, briefing travelers, monitoring responsible conduct, and reporting incidents or concerns.
Suppliers and excursion providers are responsible for complying with applicable laws and NHT's communicated sustainability requirements and for cooperating with monitoring and corrective-action processes. Travelers are responsible for following the NHT Traveler Code of Conduct, guide instructions, and applicable local regulations.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy shall be reviewed at least annually, or earlier where required by changes to Travelife requirements, applicable legislation, destination conditions, NHT operations, or identified sustainability risks.
NHT shall use findings from monitoring, supplier reviews, incidents, complaints, staff feedback, and traveler feedback to improve its excursion management practices and strengthen the implementation of this policy.
