Sustainable Partner Agency Policy

Nepal Hiking Team is committed to working with partner agencies that share our commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism. We seek to build long-term partnerships that protect the environment, respect local cultures, support communities, promote fair working conditions, and encourage responsible tourism practices.

Purpose

This policy establishes the sustainability principles and expectations that Nepal Hiking Team applies when working with partner agencies and tourism partners. It provides a common framework for cooperation, responsible tourism practices, environmental protection, community support, ethical business conduct, and continuous improvement.

Objectives

Through our partnerships, Nepal Hiking Team aims to:

  • Promote responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
  • Reduce environmental impacts from tourism activities and operations.
  • Minimize waste, single-use plastics, and unnecessary resource consumption.
  • Support local employment, businesses, suppliers, and communities.
  • Promote fair wages, safe working conditions, and respectful treatment of workers.
  • Protect natural resources, biodiversity, cultural heritage, and local traditions.
  • Encourage responsible use of energy and water.
  • Reduce carbon emissions and support appropriate climate-related initiatives.
  • Promote responsible visitor behavior and respect for local communities.
  • Encourage partners to improve their sustainability performance over time.

Partner Sustainability Commitments

Nepal Hiking Team expects partner agencies to support the following principles where relevant to their operations.

Community and Local Economic Support

Partners are encouraged to work with local suppliers, businesses, guides, porters, accommodation providers, transport providers, and service providers. Wherever practical, tourism activities should create meaningful employment and income opportunities for local communities.

Partners should respect local communities and avoid practices that create unnecessary disruption, exploitation, or harm. Tourism activities should contribute positively to the destinations in which they operate.

Fair Employment and Working Conditions

Partners should provide fair and respectful working conditions for their employees and workers. This includes appropriate wages, reasonable working conditions, workplace safety, and respect for fundamental labor rights.

Partners should not tolerate forced labor, child labor, discrimination, harassment, abuse, or exploitation within their operations or supply chains.

Environmental Protection

Partners should take practical measures to protect natural environments and reduce the environmental impact of tourism activities.

This includes respecting protected areas and local environmental regulations, avoiding damage to ecosystems, reducing pollution, protecting natural resources, and encouraging travelers and staff to follow responsible environmental practices.

Waste Management

Partners should work to reduce, reuse, and responsibly dispose of waste generated through their offices, tours, treks, and other tourism activities.

Where practical, partners should:

  • Reduce single-use plastics and unnecessary packaging.
  • Use reusable or biodegradable alternatives.
  • Provide appropriate waste collection facilities.
  • Carry waste bags during trekking and outdoor activities.
  • Separate and recycle suitable materials.
  • Avoid disposing of waste in rivers, trails, forests, campsites, or other natural areas.

Energy and Water Conservation

Partners are encouraged to reduce unnecessary energy and water consumption through practical measures such as energy-efficient lighting, responsible use of electrical equipment, and water-saving practices.

Partners should avoid polluting natural water sources and should encourage responsible water use among staff, guides, travelers, and suppliers.

Sustainable Products and Procurement

Partners are encouraged to purchase environmentally responsible, durable, locally produced, and ethically sourced products and services where practical.

Preference should be given to suppliers that demonstrate responsible environmental, social, and labor practices. Partners should consider sustainability factors alongside quality, safety, availability, and cost when making procurement decisions.

Cultural Heritage and Responsible Tourism

Partners should respect and help protect local cultures, traditions, heritage sites, religious places, and community practices.

Tourism activities should not encourage disrespectful, exploitative, or harmful behavior. Travelers should be informed about appropriate local customs, cultural practices, photography, dress, waste disposal, and responsible behavior before and during their visits.

Wildlife and Animal Welfare

Partners should not promote tourism activities that involve the exploitation, abuse, or inappropriate treatment of animals.

Where wildlife or animals form part of a tourism experience, partners should encourage responsible practices that respect animal welfare and applicable conservation requirements.

Carbon Reduction and Climate Action

Partners are encouraged to identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with their operations and tourism activities.

Where appropriate, partners may support initiatives such as tree plantation, conservation activities, sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, and other credible environmental programs.

Health, Safety, and Responsible Operations

Partners should maintain appropriate health and safety practices for employees, guides, travelers, and other stakeholders.

Tourism services should be delivered responsibly and in accordance with applicable laws, safety requirements, destination regulations, and professional standards.

Ethical Business Practices

Nepal Hiking Team expects its partner agencies to conduct business honestly and responsibly. Partners should comply with applicable laws and should avoid bribery, corruption, fraud, discrimination, conflicts of interest, and other unethical business practices.

Partners should provide accurate information about tourism products, prices, services, sustainability claims, and destination conditions.

Responsible Customer Communication

Partners are encouraged to provide travelers with practical information about responsible travel, including environmental protection, cultural respect, waste management, local customs, and appropriate behavior.

Sustainability claims should be accurate, transparent, and supported by actual practices.

Commitment to Travelife

Nepal Hiking Team encourages partner agencies to adopt relevant Travelife sustainability principles and continuously improve their sustainability performance.

Where applicable, partners are encouraged to work toward recognized sustainability standards, certifications, or other credible sustainability initiatives.

Compliance and Monitoring

Nepal Hiking Team will communicate relevant sustainability expectations to partner agencies and encourage cooperation in implementing them.

Sustainability performance may be reviewed through partner communication, documentation, feedback, questionnaires, meetings, or other appropriate assessment methods.

Where a sustainability concern or area of non-compliance is identified, Nepal Hiking Team will communicate the issue to the relevant partner and, where appropriate, agree on reasonable corrective actions and improvement measures.

Serious or repeated breaches of legal, ethical, environmental, labor, or safety requirements may affect the continuation of the partnership.

Continuous Improvement

Nepal Hiking Team recognizes that sustainability is an ongoing process. We encourage partner agencies to identify opportunities for improvement, share good practices, and cooperate on initiatives that create positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

Review

This policy will be reviewed annually to assess its relevance and effectiveness and will be updated where necessary to reflect new sustainability practices, applicable laws, destination requirements, stakeholder expectations, and continuous improvement.
