Nepal Tilicho Lake Trek - 15 days

The Tilicho Lake Trek leads you to Tilicho Lake, a glacial body of water at 4,919 m (16,138 ft) in Nepal’s Annapurna range. It is one of the highest lakes in the world. This full itinerary for the Tilicho Lake Trek lasts 15 days. You will spend 10 of those days trekking.

Our 15-day Tilicho itinerary includes 10 full days on the trail, covering roughly 116 km (72 mi) from the starting point at Jagat to Manang.

Rated as moderate, this trek requires good fitness and proper acclimatization, but remains achievable for both determined beginners and seasoned hikers. All trekkers must hold an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for entry and monitoring in the Annapurna region. We, Nepal Hiking Team, will manage everything for you.

The best trekking windows are March to May and September to November, when skies are clearest and trails are driest. Local teahouses and lodges provide accommodation, and new facilities are available up to Tilicho Base Camp. So, you do not need to camp on the lakeside. Meals typically consist of local Nepali dishes served by lodge owners, accompanied by private or shared rooms for overnight stays.

Trekkers cross vastly varying terrains: subtropical forests and terraced farmland. And then pine and rhododendron woodlands climb into the Trans-Himalayan zone of naked slopes and glacial moraines. Along the way, you’ll visit traditional Gurung and Manangi villages (Ngawal, Munchi, and Braka), ancient monasteries, and yak pastures. Each of these villages offers a window into Himalayan culture.

Whether you’re aiming to tick off a high‑altitude landmark or seeking less‑traveled Himalayan paths, the Tilicho Lakes Trek in Nepal delivers jaw‑dropping vistas, cultural immersion, and a rewarding physical challenge in equal measure.

Why Tilicho Lake Trek in Nepal?

  • Take a scenic ride from Kathmandu to Jagat. Look for farmlands, terraced lands, villages, and small shops along the way
  • Walk on varied terrains, including steep ascents, rocky paths, narrow trails, and several suspension bridges
  • Encounter various plants, including juniper, oak, rhododendron, pine, and alpine flowers
  • Witness several wildlife species, including the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, and musk deer
  • Marvel at the spectacular views of the Annapurna range, including Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna, among others
  • Pass through beautiful forests, valleys, and traditional villages, offering an overview of the local culture
  • Explore Tibetan culture and experience the region's unique lifestyle, cuisine, and traditions
  • Visit several religious shrines, including monasteries, chortens, and mani walls, which reflect the area's rich spiritual significance
  • Visit Tilicho Lake, one of the highest-altitude lakes in the world, and witness its serene alpine beauty

Tilicho Lake Hike Route Overview

You’ll begin with a scenic 8‑hour drive from Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway and winding mountain roads to Jagat (1,100 m). Here, the trek starts.

On your first day, you will walk along the Marsyangdi River. You will go upstream through oak and rhododendron forests. You will cross a traditional suspension bridge.

Then, you will climb steadily to Dharapani, which is at 1,960 m. Along this stretch, you’ll glimpse terraced fields and rural hamlets, setting the tone for the cultural immersion ahead.

From Dharapani, you continue through pine and fir woodlands to Chame (2,630 m), the district headquarters of Manang. The valley widens here, and snow‑tipped peaks come into view above the river gorge.

Next, you trek past waterfalls and deep riverine canyons to Pisang (3,300 m), where a side trail leads up to the Pisang Peak viewpoint. A steady climb on a high trail takes you to Ngawal (3,660 m). This ancient stone village has Tibetan-style prayer walls and great views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak.

The Tilicho detour starts in Manang (3,540 m). Before this, you spend a day getting used to the altitude. You can visit Gangapurna Lake and the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic. You’ll follow the southern bank of the Thorang Khola past Kangsar and then ascend into the rocky debris fields surrounding Siri Kharka (4,060 m).

From Siri Kharka, a 5‑hour trek over loose scree and landslide‑prone slopes delivers you to Tilicho Base Camp (4,140 m). The next morning, you hike early to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m). It is one of the highest lakes in the world. The turquoise water reflects the north face of Tilicho Peak.

Your return retraces the same high‑altitude trail down to Siri Kharka, then back through Khangsar to Manang. You will take a rough jeep ride over mountain paths. This journey will take you back to Besisahar in one long day. The route winds through deep gorges and green hills.

Finally, you finish the Tilicho Trail with a 6- to 7-hour drive to Kathmandu. You arrive with fresh memories of Himalayan views, traditional mountain villages, and the peacefulness of Tilicho Lake.

Best Time for Tilicho Lake Trekking -2025/2026

Are you unsure about when to book for Tilicho Lake? If you are, we want to guide you to the best time for your visit.

The ideal time to trek to Tilicho Lake is from March to May and from September to November. These months fall under the spring and autumn seasons, respectively. During these seasons, the weather conditions will be favorable for the hike.

If you want to opt for a silent and less crowded trail, you can also book the trek during the monsoon season.

Tilicho Lake Trek without High-altitude Thorong La Pass

Our 15-day Annapurna Tilicho Lake Itinerary is one of the best kinds. We have specially crafted this Tilicho Lake package without including the crossing of the High Annapurna Thorong La pass. Thorong La Pass is a high-altitude pass located at an altitude of 5,416m. Even though the hike is moderate, the challenge of the Thorong La expedition is minimized, making a shorter, manageable itinerary suitable for those with a time limit and little trekking experience. It fully focuses on Tilicho Tal, highest lake point on the planet and makes it as a primary destination but not a detour of the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Difficulty Level?

You may be wondering whether the Tilicho Lake Trek is challenging. The Tilicho Lake is a moderate trek.

On the trip, you'll be hiking for approximately 10 days. The hiking routes feature steep uphill and downhill sections, but you can complete them with determination. The most challenging part of the Tilicho Lake Trip is around Siri Kharka due to steep uphill climbs, loose rocks, and landslide-prone areas.

The highest elevation you'll reach is 4,919 m. At this level of altitude, there are some chances of altitude sickness. However, our Tilicho Lake itinerary is prepared with sufficient acclimatization time; hence, you can acclimatize while gradually ascending toward your destination.

Alternatives for Tilicho Lake Trek Itinerary

We have some suggestions if you're looking for alternative trekking packages for Tilicho Trekking.

First on the list is the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake. It is a 16-day trek that is one of the best treks in the Annapurna region. The itinerary for both treks is nearly identical until they reach Tilicho Lake. But returning from Tilicho Lake, you’ll follow the Thorong La Pass, which is the highest peak (5,416m) of the Annapurna Circuit.

Next, you can look at the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek. It is a 12-day trek, which is one of the most popular trekking trails in this region. This short trek is almost similar to both the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake and this one. But you’ll skip the Tilicho Lake visit and move towards the Thorong La Pass.

With this, we’ve reached the end of the overview. If you have any questions regarding which trip suits you the best, please send us an inquiry, and we will assist you accordingly.

The lake was referred to by the leader of the French expedition team as ‘The Great Ice Lake.’ The Lake also holds an important place for Hindus, as it is featured in one of the holiest texts of the Hindu faith, The Ramayana. • 9-day Annapurna Circuit Trek + Tilicho Lake trip

We've had a fantastic experience with Nepal Hiking Team, and our guide, Suraj Shrestha, has been incredibly helpful, thoughtful, and encouraging throughout this challenging journey.

We feel very fortunate to have made it to both Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass, especially after the heavy snowfall the day before. Thanks to the team’s well-considered itinerary, we were able to conserve our energy and fully enjoy capturing the stunning scenery.

  • 9 days ACT trek including Tilicho Lake with Suraj

We wanted to do the Annapurna Circuit after doing EBC back in 2023. This year, we came back and did the “highlight” part of the circuit with Suraj — Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass.

Suraj was super helpful the whole way. Gave us a solid briefing every night and always checked in on how we were feeling as we went higher. Proper looked after us.

It actually kept snowing the night before both our big days — 1) Tilicho Lake and 2) Thorong La.

We started at 4am for both, and the snowy path made things a bit trickier. But Suraj stayed close, made sure we didn’t get lost or slip — honestly felt safe the whole time.

Would 100% come back for more treks in Nepal 😊

  • Best Trekking experience for a 8-Day ACT

Just finished my first Nepal trek on the Annapurna Circuit route. The 8-day hike was amazing — great weather, and our guide was super helpful and spoke fluent English. Our porter was really cheerful and supportive too.

We made it to both Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass safely. I’d definitely recommend booking a guide and porter — it makes a huge difference, especially at high altitude.

You can ask Nepal Hiking Team anything — they’ll sort it out for you, no worries.

  • 16-day Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

Huge thanks to the Nepal Hiking Team — especially Mr. Ganga, our awesome guide Navaraj Thapa (Ratz), and our strong-as-an-ox porter Sudan Ghale.

We kicked things off planning from our desk back home, and big shoutout to Mr. Naba for being super quick and helpful with sorting out our trek itinerary. Everything ran like clockwork — from the airport pickup to hashing out the last trek details in Kathmandu.

From the moment Ratz and Sudan picked us up at the hotel, the real adventure kicked off. These guys are total pros. Always smiling, always in a good mood, and honestly, they had our backs every step of the way — even when things got tough.

We shared a bunch of laughs, loads of stories, and covered serious ground through the stunning Annapurna region. And Tilicho Lake? Just wow. It was 16 days of unforgettable moments and some serious bonding.

Couldn’t have asked for a better crew. We’re already dreaming about coming back.

Nepal Hiking Team — 100% recommend. Go for it. You’ll be in the best hands.

  • Anapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake

I had an amazing experience trekking the Annapurna Circuit and visiting Tilicho Lake with Nepal Hiking Team this November, guided by Vishma and supported by our porter Ratna.

From the moment Ganga and Vishma welcomed us at the WoodApple Hotel to the heartfelt farewell at the airport, we felt completely cared for and in the best hands. Vishma expertly guided us through the journey, sharing his extensive knowledge of the mountains and ensuring every aspect of our trip was well managed.

Alongside Ratna, he made sure we had comfortable places to stay and delicious meals to enjoy each night. Their companionship and thoughtful care turned them into the perfect tour "family," making our adventure all the more memorable.

This was our third trip with Nepal Hiking Team, and once again, we highly recommend them to others!!

They are different treks that overlap partially. The Tilicho Lake Trek is a shorter, focused journey that takes you from Kathmandu, then through Manang and Tilicho Base Camp, ending at Tilicho Lake. It’s ideal for those who want to explore the lake without crossing Thorong La Pass.

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is a longer and more demanding route that includes both Tilicho Lake and nearly the full circuit, encompassing a crossing over Thorong La (5,416m) and a descent into Muktinath or Jomsom, offering a more extensive Himalayan experience.

Both treks are located in the Annapurna region and share parts of the same trail, particularly around the Manang area. The key difference is the route length and elevation challenges. The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a longer circuit trek that includes a crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and covers more varied terrain—from subtropical forests to high-altitude passes—typically ending in Muktinath.

In contrast, the Tilicho Lake Trek is shorter and more focused, taking you on a side trip to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m), one of the world’s highest lakes—without crossing Thorong La. It’s ideal for trekkers who want a high-altitude adventure with fewer days and without the demanding pass crossing.

All these Tilicho Lake itineraries can be tailored to your schedule, interests, and budget. Custom trips operate as private departures (no group dates), and we’re happy to add extra days in Kathmandu, Pokhara, or along the trail for a nominal fee.

Transportation

All ground transfers are included in the Tilicho Lake Trek package. Upon arrival and departure, a private vehicle will be provided for airport transfers in Kathmandu. You'll drive from Kathmandu to Jagat by private jeep (approx. 8 hours), which is the trekking starting point, for the next day.

After completing the trek, you’ll come to Besisahar by private jeep and then travel back to Kathmandu.

Trek Difficulty: Who Can Trek?

The Tilicho Lake Trek is described as a moderate trek that spans 10 days of trekking. You will be walking 6 to 8 hours a day, usually on steep uphill and downhill trails. If you are wondering, the path from Siri Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp is considered the most challenging part of the whole trek. You will have to walk on narrow paths through loose scree and a landslide-prone area. So it requires high focus, balance, and stamina.

Altitude sickness (AMS) may be an issue at higher altitudes; however, the program allows for a complete acclimatization day at Manang to minimize the possibility.

Our typical itinerary is approximately 112 to 116 km (around 70-72 miles) between the starting point, Jagat, and the ending point, Besisahar. The average daily distances covered are 10-12 kilometers. (6-7.5 miles)

Our guides are highly experienced in high-altitude trekking and well-trained to manage safety throughout the Tilicho Lake journey. They carry a first aid kit and an oximeter to regularly monitor oxygen levels. They are trained to recognize the early signs of altitude sickness, adjusting their pace or itinerary as needed.

The trek includes a rest day in Manang for acclimatization, and the itinerary is designed to support a gradual ascent. We carefully select teahouses based on hygiene and safety standards. In case of serious emergencies, our team is equipped to coordinate rapid ground support or helicopter evacuation.

The best seasons to trek to Tilicho Lake are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is more stable, skies are clearer, and the mountain scenery is at its finest—ideal conditions for both safety and enjoyment.

Important Notice: Trekking in the summer is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, landslides, slippery trails, and the presence of leeches. In winter, the trails from Siri Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp can frequently be blocked because of icy conditions. Snow can lead to landslides, which often occur due to melting snow during the daytime.

For a safe and memorable experience, plan your Tilicho Lake Trek during the spring or autumn seasons.

Vaccinations are not mandatory for trekking to Tilicho Lake. However, some travelers opt for precautionary shots, such as rabies, due to the presence of stray dogs in rural areas.

We recommend checking the latest guidelines from the CDC or WHO before your trip for up-to-date vaccination advice.

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for the Tilicho Lake Trek. Your policy must cover high-altitude rescue and helicopter evacuation above 5,000 meters, as well as trip cancellation and baggage loss.

Start preparing 4–6 weeks before the trek by incorporating cardio exercises such as hiking, stair climbing, cycling, or brisk walking to build endurance. Doing one long hike a week with a backpack will simulate actual trail conditions.

Strength training—especially for your legs and core—will help with uphill climbs and steep descents. Try training on uneven surfaces and break in your hiking boots early to avoid discomfort on the trail.

Yes, we provide essential gear for the Tilicho Lake Trek, including a -20°C down jacket, a warm four-season sleeping bag, and a 70L duffel bag (to be returned post-trek).

You’ll also receive a Nepal Hiking Team T-shirt, cap, Tilicho Lake trek map, and a certificate of achievement noting the highest altitude reached.

You’ll need a 20–30L daypack for daily essentials like water, snacks, a camera, and extra layers. Your main gear will go in the duffel bag, carried by a porter.

Each porter carries the belongings of two trekkers, with a combined limit of 25 kg. Your individual duffel bag should weigh between 10 and 12.5 kg (22 and 27 lbs).

Pack light and smart. Bring moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell. Essential items include hiking boots, trekking poles, gloves, sunglasses, a warm hat, and a sun hat.

Other must-haves include a headlamp, water bottles or a hydration bladder, simple toiletries, and layers suitable for both hot days and freezing mornings. We’ll provide a complete packing list to help you prepare.

Accommodation and Connectivity

You’ll stay in locally operated teahouses, which are simple but clean lodges offering twin-sharing rooms with beds, mattresses, blankets, and shared bathrooms. At higher elevations, like Tilicho Base Camp (4,150 m), facilities are more basic, and squat toilets may be the norm.

Rooms are unheated, but dining halls typically have a wood stove to keep warm in the evenings. Hot showers are available at most stops, although a small additional charge may apply.

Yes, you’ll find mobile coverage and Wi-Fi in most villages up to Manang. After that, especially toward Tilicho Base Camp, the signal becomes unreliable or unavailable.

For better connectivity, we recommend buying a local SIM card (NTC or Ncell) with a data package in Kathmandu. It’s more cost-effective and offers stronger reception in lower regions than teahouse Wi-Fi. Yes, you’ll find mobile coverage and Wi-Fi in most villages up to Manang. Yes, teahouses along the trail offer electricity, and you can charge your devices for a small fee (typically $2–$3 per item). However, power can be inconsistent, especially at higher altitudes or in peak seasons.

We strongly advise bringing a power bank and a universal travel adapter compatible with Nepal’s 2-pin and 3-pin plug system (220–240V).

Single rooms can be arranged at an extra charge, where available. However, higher-altitude stops like Tilicho Base Camp often have limited space, making single occupancy less likely.

Solo female travelers will either have a private room (if possible) or be matched with another female guest. You will never be asked to share a room with a male traveler.

Meals and Drinking Water

Teahouses along the Tilicho Lake Trek serve a variety of hot, freshly prepared meals—ranging from Nepali dal bhat, momos, soups, noodles, pasta, and rice dishes to Indian and continental cuisine. Breakfast options include Tibetan bread, chapati, eggs, pancakes, muesli, and potatoes. You’ll select meals from a set menu at each stop.

Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know in advance or inform your guide on the trail—they’ll coordinate with the teahouse kitchens accordingly.

Yes, drinking water is available throughout the trek. You can refill your bottles at teahouses or safe water stations. Bottled water is discouraged due to environmental concerns, especially in conservation zones.

We recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and water purification tablets or filters. Our guides also carry purification methods in case of an emergency. Aim to drink 3–4 liters daily to stay hydrated at high altitudes.

Cost & Money Matters

We recommend withdrawing or exchanging Nepalese Rupees (NPR) in Kathmandu before your trek begins. There are no reliable ATMs along the Tilicho Lake route after you leave Jagat and remote villages like Manang. But Tilicho Base Camp often lacks functional machines.

Carrying approximately NPR 25,000 (USD 190–200) in small denominations is advisable. This should cover hot showers, snacks, Wi-Fi, device charging, and any extras not included in your package.

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is a respected and widely appreciated tradition in Nepal. Most trekkers offer a tip to their guide and porter as a gesture of gratitude for their support and service.

There’s no fixed amount—it depends on your satisfaction and experience. Tips can be given in Nepali Rupees (NPR) or US Dollars (USD) at the end of the trek.
