The difficulty level of the Upper Mustang helicopter trek can vary depending on factors such as altitude, weather conditions, and personal fitness level. Generally, the Upper Mustang heli trek is considered to be moderately challenging due to its high altitude and remote location.
One of the main challenges of the Upper Mustang helicopter trek is the altitude. The region lies at a high elevation, with most of the trek over 3,000 meters. Altitude sickness can be a concern, and trekkers may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and fatigue. Acclimatizing correctly, staying hydrated, and following a gradual ascent are essential to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
Another challenge of the Upper Mustang helicopter trek is the remote and rugged terrain. The trek involves trekking through dry and barren landscapes with little vegetation, steep trails, and high mountain passes. Still, it can be manageable for trekkers with a reasonable level of physical fitness and prior trekking experience.
The Upper Mustang region lies in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas, which means it is relatively dry and receives less rainfall compared to other parts of Nepal. The best time for an Upper Mustang helicopter trek is during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) seasons, considered Nepal's peak trekking seasons.
During autumn, the weather in Upper Mustang is generally stable, with clear skies, mild temperatures, and little to no rainfall. The autumn season offers excellent visibility and stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, making it a preferred time for helicopter treks.
Similarly, the weather in Upper Mustang is also favorable in spring, with mild temperatures, clear skies, and little precipitation. The spring season is known for blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, adding to the region's natural beauty.
With this, we’ve reached to end of the overview. We hope you enjoyed reading about this package. If you want any further explanation regarding the trek, please email us. We shall get back to you immediately and organize a wonderful trip for you!

Visited Upper Mustang Valley in August ‘24 and did the version of the trek that covers the eastern part, including Yara, which is a 12-day trek.
It was two of us traveling as a couple, and with no previous experience in long treks, we weren’t sure what to expect. All I can say is that the landscape was beyond anything we could have set in our minds, and we feel grateful to have experienced such a place. The villages, the people there, and the Himalayas all blended superbly to offer an incredible glimpse into this remote part of Nepal.
For those planning to visit Nepal during monsoon season, the dry climate of the region is an added bonus with minimal rainfall.
Lastly, I must mention the professionalism of our organizers, Nepal Hiking Team. Ganga, along with our guide Dependra and porter Surindra, took care of every detail and resolved any issues, allowing us to fully enjoy the trek. I wholeheartedly recommend their services.
A more remote trek than the usual routes, but all the more rewarding for it. The scenery was spectacular, with fascinating history and culture. We trekked up the western trail and returned via the eastern side, covering 170 km.
From past experience, we knew Nepal Hiking Team was excellent.
This time, we were even luckier with our fantastic guide, Dipendra “Dip.” Nothing was ever too much trouble, and his smile lit up every tea house. He also kept us off the road as much as possible, with only about 10% of our trek on it.
Ask for Dip 👍🏻
Did the Upper Mustang trek with Nepal Hiking Team for the first time.
Everything—from airport pickup to accommodation and logistics—was flawless. The response time via email before the trip was also prompt when finalizing details.
During the trek, we made some unusual and demanding requests (probably more than once), yet our guide and porters did their best to accommodate us—even going as far as trying to find a live chicken for dinner on our last night in Lo Manthang!
The trek wasn’t the toughest, but our safety was always their priority. Midway through the descent, one of our team members was hit with AMS in the middle of the night. Balaram, Arun, and their team acted immediately, rushing everyone to a lower altitude and arranging a helicopter to Pokhara for medical treatment. Despite facing a lot of issues with an unhelpful insurance company, they managed to secure the helicopter in time, ensuring our team member received medical attention before his condition worsened. Huge kudos for that!
Would definitely recommend Nepal Hiking Team to anyone looking to trek in Nepal.
I recently completed a most startling trek along with a friend to the restricted Upper Mustang Region of Nepal in April with the Nepal Hiking Team.
This was my second trek with Nepal Hiking Team to the Upper Mustang region. I have discovered that both my trips were well organized by NHT and everything was done very efficiently and wonderfully.
On my latest trek, I was in touch with Nepal Hiking Team and Ganga via email gave every detail about the trek. I was seeking for a trek that was different from my previous trek. Therefore, I decided to trek to the area on the east side of the Kali Gandaki River. All my queries were resolved via the emails within a short time. He also gave me a customized itinerary and quoted a price. I accepted his proposed program as it met all our requirements in a reasonable price.
For Upper Mustang Trek, a guide was must and NHT provided professional guides as well as a porter for two of us. The guide was Santa, a very admirable guide. He was much familiar with the areas that we strolled and looked after us very well. His main concern was our safety and wellbeing. The porter was Vishnu; he too was wonderful and strong. We enjoyed the company of both the porter and guide.
I hope that someday, I will trek to Nepal again and definitely I would book and trek with Nepal Hiking Team. I would highly suggest that anyone planning for visiting Nepal for a trek must contact them.
Thanks again Nepal Hiking Team.

This package includes a series of scenic flights to maximize your time and experience. The cost covers the round-trip airfare from Kathmandu to Pokhara, as well as a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. The return from Lo Manthang is then covered by the private helicopter ride to Pokhara, followed by the flight back to Kathmandu. This reduces extensive road travel and offers stunning mountain views.
The flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara is approximately 30 minutes. It offers magnificent views of the Himalayas, including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and the Annapurna range, setting the stage for your Himalayan adventure.
All ground transportation is included in the package. This covers private vehicle transfers for airport pickups and drop-offs in Kathmandu, as well as any other necessary transfers, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey throughout your trip.
The trek is considered moderately challenging. The main challenges are the high altitude, with most of the trek over 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) and a maximum elevation of 4,200 meters (13,780 ft) at passes like Nyi La and Tsarang La. The terrain is remote and rugged, consisting of dry, barren landscapes, steep trails, and high passes. However, the pace is gradual with built-in acclimatization days, making it manageable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and some prior trekking experience.
The highest points you will reach are the mountain passes. You will ascend to the Nyi La Pass at 4,010 meters (13,156 ft) and the Tsarang La Pass at 3,870 meters (12,696 ft). While the trekking days involve these altitudes, you will be sleeping at lower elevations, which aids in acclimatization. The helicopter ride itself will fly at much higher altitudes.
A traveler review on the page features Mr. Garfield Saunders, age 77, who successfully completed a trek in the Upper Mustang region with Nepal Hiking Team. His positive experience shows that with a good level of fitness and the right support, the trek is accessible to seniors. Your personal fitness level is the key factor, and the company's experienced guides will ensure your pace is comfortable and safety is prioritized.
Altitude sickness is a significant concern in this high-altitude region. The itinerary is designed with a gradual ascent and includes rest days in Lo Manthang to aid acclimatization. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, and fatigue. Your guide is trained to recognize these symptoms and will ensure you stay hydrated and follow a slow pace. As highlighted in a traveler's review, Nepal Hiking Team is prepared to arrange a helicopter evacuation if a trekker's health is at serious risk, prioritizing your safety above all.
Your safety is supported by an experienced, English-speaking guide who knows the region intimately. A porter will carry your main luggage (for every 2 trekkers, 1 porter), allowing you to trek with just a daypack. The guide carries a comprehensive medical kit. The company also ensures all staff have proper insurance, equipment, and support, so you are in capable hands throughout the remote journey.
You will be trekking within the Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest protected area in Nepal. While sightings are not guaranteed, the region is home to rare species such as snow leopards, Himalayan blue sheep (bharal), and Tibetan argali. The diverse flora and fauna make it a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, adding to the unique experience of the trek.
Nepal Hiking Team provides several essential items to support your trek. You will be loaned a high-quality down jacket and a four-season sleeping bag, which must be returned after the trip. They also give you a Nepal Hiking Team duffel bag for your porter to carry, a company t-shirt, and a trekking map to help you follow the route.
You will need to bring your own personal trekking equipment. This includes sturdy, broken-in trekking boots, warm base layers, trekking pants, a waterproof jacket, sun hat, warm hat, gloves, sunglasses, a water bottle, and a daypack. The cost excludes personal trekking equipment, so it's crucial to pack appropriately for the varying temperatures and dry, dusty terrain. A detailed packing list is usually provided upon booking.
For the high altitude, prioritize layers to manage temperature swings. Sun protection is essential due to the thin atmosphere and barren landscape—bring high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses. The region is in a rain shadow, so it will be very dry; a moisturizer and a water bottle with purification tablets or a filter are recommended, as bottled water can be costly and adds to waste.
In Kathmandu and Pokhara, the package includes two nights of accommodation in a 5-star hotel with breakfast. During the trek, you will stay in "best available twin-sharing lodge to lodge accommodation." These are basic but comfortable guesthouses (teahouses) in villages like Kagbeni, Samar, Geling, Ghami, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang. They offer a place to sleep, eat, and experience local hospitality.
The lodges in Upper Mustang are basic but generally clean and comfortable. They provide twin-sharing rooms with simple bedding. As the region is remote, amenities are limited. The cost excludes hot showers, which are often available for an extra fee. Electricity may be available for charging devices for a small cost. The experience is about embracing the rustic charm of this ancient region.
Connectivity in Upper Mustang is very limited. While some lodges may offer Wi-Fi for a fee, it can be unreliable. Mobile phone coverage (Ncell or NTC) is sporadic and often non-existent in remote valleys. The trek offers a great opportunity to disconnect from digital life and immerse yourself in the stark landscapes and rich culture. Your guide will have a satellite phone or other means of communication for emergencies.
The package includes full board meals during the trek, which means breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all provided. Your meals will be taken at the lodges where you stay. Tea and coffee are also included with meals, helping you stay warm and hydrated. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, only breakfast is included at the 5-star hotels.
The lodges offer a menu of Nepali and Tibetan staples, as well as some international dishes like pasta, noodles, and soups. You can expect hearty meals like dal bhat (rice and lentils), momos (dumplings), and noodle soups, which are well-suited for providing energy at high altitudes. The region is famous for its apples, so you might get to enjoy fresh apples or apple products like pie and cider when in season.
Staying hydrated is crucial to prevent altitude sickness. The cost excludes bottled water, which can be purchased at lodges but is expensive and contributes to plastic waste. A sustainable and cost-effective alternative is to bring your own water bottle and use purification tablets or a UV sterilizer. Your guide can advise on where to safely refill from streams or lodge taps. The included tea and coffee also contribute to your fluid intake.
The package offers flexibility. While there are scheduled group departures for those wanting to join others, Nepal Hiking Team can also organize this as a private trek for you and your party. You can request a customized itinerary and date to suit your specific needs. This is ideal for families, couples, or solo trekkers who prefer a more personalized experience.
Tipping is not included in the package cost and is a matter of personal discretion. It is a customary way to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of your guide and porter. The review from a 77-year-old trekker specifically mentions tipping as a way to thank the staff. Nepal Hiking Team will often provide guidelines on recommended tipping amounts based on the length of the trek and the level of service provided.
The "Cost Excludes" section clearly lists items not covered by the package. You should budget for international airfare, Nepal visa fees, travel insurance, meals not specified in the itinerary (mainly in cities), personal expenses (snacks, cold drinks, hot showers, battery charging), and tips for the staff. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover helicopter evacuation, a critical consideration for a remote, high-altitude trek like this.
