Nepal Trekking - Langtang Region

Langtang region, dominated by Mt. Langtang Lirung (7246 m) and Langtang Ri (7200 m) is the land sandwiched between Himalayan range bordering Tibet and slightly lower range of southern snowy peaks. Langtang region lies just north of Kathmandu and has a quick and easy access from the capital and offers great array of trekking choices, the major trekking areas being the beautiful Langtang valley, the scared alpine lake of Gosainkunda, and the Sherpa settlement of Helambu and its wonderful farmlands. These three major areas are combined in many different ways to form beautiful trekking trails that offer trek for a week to more than two weeks. These fantastic trails own some awesome viewpoints like Kyangjin Ri (4350m), Tsergo Ri (5066m), etc., those provide a stunning 360 degree mountain views offering panoramic view of wide Nepalese Himalayan range from Annapurna in the west to Makalu in the east. The region being nearer to Tibet border, the religion, language, culture of its major inhabitants’-Tamangs, and Sherpas, are much more similar to those of Tibetans than to the traditions of Middle Hill dwellers of their own country.

Among the various routes in Langtang Region, some trek can be started right from Kathmandu after a short drive to Sundarijal. For other trails you can either drive to Dhunche or Syabrubesi to start the trek, likewise you can end at any of your desired points. Some trails follow upstream Trisuli River while longer trails follow upstream Bhote Kosi River through ethnic Tamang and Sherpa villages; lush green forests and the wide spread Kyangjin Valley encircled by snow-clad peaks from all sides. You can do trekking in Langtang region all over the year except you are suggested not to trek during monsoons months of July and August. But if you want to be familiar with the Himalayan wild flowers, no other time is better than monsoon although the several species of popular national flower, Rhododendron, bloom in spring while several other wild flowers bloom in other time of year. Just after the monsoon, trek in Langtang region offers superb views of the great peak of Langtang Lirung (7246m) which dominates the upper valley and straddles the Tibetan border.

The Langtang valley trek follows through the bamboo, pine and rhododendron forests, ascending through the pastures to arrive at the alpine meadows at Kyangjin Gompa. The Gosainkunda trek climbs more steeply through the alpine villages and farmlands up above the treeline up an alpine ridge that offers huge Himalayan scenery, to reach a rocky valley hosting scared lakes scared for Hindu pilgrims. From Gosainkunda, you can either trek back to Dhunche or if you choose more adventure can continue over the high Laurebina La and walk all the way back to Kathmandu. The Helambu trail gives you an opportunity to have a closer look to village life and culture although this trail lacks view points for fantastic mountain views as it runs through comparatively lower altitude. As the treks in Langtang region involves only slow and gradual ascent, it is considered less strenuous, but yet, it is challenging as it takes you to Kyangjin Gompa, Lauribina La, and Gosainkunda. If you choose the trails through Ganja La, it is more challenging.

Compared to Everest and Annapurna treks, the treks in Langtang region are considered easier and cheaper because they require no special permits, are less bothersome due to altitude, available are plenty of decent teahouses, and no flights involved-just long bus rides. Please book directly online or write us if you are interested in any of the exciting programs we offer in Langtang region.
