As per legends, saint Manjushree is credited with the creation of the Kathmandu valley. It is believed that the entire Kathmandu valley was once a lake. “The god of wisdom” saw a lotus flower in the lake and cut a gorge in the centre. As a result, water from the lake gushed out and drained it, giving rise the Kathmandu valley. The place where the lotus settled is known as the Swayambhunath Stupa.
